I feel like the worst mom in the world. I developed pre eclampsia and was given magnesium sulfate to help with my bp. They didn't tell me it would mess with my milk supply. For the last two nights my baby girl has been hungry and crying all night because she isn't getting enough from me. She was 6-7 at birth, now she's 5-7 at 4 days old. I ended up having to give her nasty formula for now. Does anyone have experience with this, and if so, how did you increase your supply?
I had an emergency c-section do to PIH and was also given magnesium sulfate on 2/15/16 at 36weeks, it affected my milk supply as well but keep in mind that the babies tummies are the size of their fist. buy a breast pump and pump in between feedings to help stimulate milk production. I must admit though, I give him formula when I think he's still hungry and I'm out of milk. usually about 1to 2 bottles a day (2oz each). He weighed 6lb.8oz &also; lost weight (4oz) within a four day period but at our one week post-op appointment he had gained the 4oz he lost and 4oz on top of that. every baby is different don't get discouraged even if u breastfeed him once a day its still good for your baby just keep an eye on his weight. best of luck.
Even keeping her at breast if she won't nurse is okay too. It's tough at first- I couldn't breastfeed my firstborn but if you stay determined but also not stress about it too much, things will get easier. If you have any concerns, contact your hospital's lactation consultant. Even if you're no longer an inpatient they could either help you in the hospital or refer you to someone else. I also hear WIC helps breastfeeding moms but i didn't go through them while attempting to breastfeed. Just do your best, it's so hard in the beginning to adjust to life with a newborn, especially after pregnancy complications, but just take things as they come, keep your pretty head high and just roll with it. 💋
PS, it's normal for babies to lose weight in the first 2 weeks as long as it's not more than 10% of her birth weight. The more you supplement with formula, the less your body will produce milk since it's a supply and demand thing.
Great advice. I try to comfort nurse but after about three minutes she cries. I'm gonna stick with it tho. And your so right that crisp is horrible. I have swelled so bad my feet and legs are beyond severely swollen with fluid. Barely walking. And all I keep getting is "it's normal."
Duuuudeeeee magnesium is THE WORST EVERRRRRR I hated it. I delivered at 29 weeks because of severe preeclampsia and HELLP syndrome, but I started pumping right away (since my itty bitty was too little to nurse), and I drank so much water! Well, once I wasn't on fluid restrictions from the damn mag. But tons and tons of water, since you can nurse baby keep her at breast as often as you can. Comfort nurse. Lots of skin to skin. Rolled oats (oatmeal), Gatorade, fenugreek, almonds...
We just had a visit today and she's lost a pound. 15% to be exact. Born at 6-7, and now at 5-7. I'm going to have to pump and nurse for sure.
