Okay. FTM question. So yesterday I went out shopping for some groceries for my fiancé for work(besides the milk and sausage I needed for supper). I got him Oscar Meyer Bologna, DeliFresh Turkey/Ham, and Hillshire Farm Corned Beef. Needless to say I been sitting here craving a deli sandwich. Given I'm only 5 weeks and haven't had an appt yet, I can't go and ask my OB what I bought is safe, and what I bought he should eat. So anyways, Google keeps giving me deli meat is a no-no, listeria is hidden. Only one article said it's very rare to get listeria so its not too much of a concern. Now when I think of deli meat, I think of them slicing it for you. Not already pre packaged. So my question is: what deli meat are they talking about? The ones behind the deli counter that need to be sliced, the pre packaged like I bought, or both? And if I plan on putting on a slice of each meat, how much is too much give or take? Should one slice of meat be on the sandwich, am I okay with all four meats, or should I just avoid that meat altogether until after the pregnancy? Thanks for your input.

You're welcome. my doctor told me all about it when I went to my first appointment so I try to explain it the same way to people who ask.

@arijane316, Thank you for explaining it. I was thinking it was the other way around.

you can eat prepackaged deli meat but it needs to be heated. if you get it fresh sliced from the deli, it's ok to eat cold. the reason being, prepackaged meat is not properly refrigerated in stores, so there can many types of bacteria on it that will die when heated.

Thanks @kaylaevans2. I plan on heating it. First time heating prepackaged meat, but who knows. Might end up tasting pretty good. Lol. @kristineen, thank you. @michelle0822 , it does help. ^•^

I'm 9 weeks and at the 8 week appointment my doctor gave me a book or no-no lunch meat was on it any types of lunch meats she said if I do eat it , it needs to heated to a certain point or fry it. So basically cook it is what I was told. But I had a football party this past Sunday and there were hoagies there and I forgot all about it and ate it and nothing happened but I usually like them heated up anyways. Hope it helps

Thank you @butterflytattooqueen, @lovemyson_610, and @emily18234. And yes Emily, I do plan to only eat it in moderation. Glad to know I can still have my meats. Lol.

Honestly I couldn't stay away from any deli meat. With both pregnancies I wanted deli sandwiches bad. I used both prepackaged and freshly cut. Nothing bad happened from it. But it is best to talk to your doctor. And there is an app somewhere that helps tell you want foods to avoid I will see if I can find it.

cold deli meat is what they say not to eat. just heat it up for a few secs in the microwave & it'll be fine. but I ate plenty of deli meat when I was pregnant, and nothing happened.

I ate deli sandwiches while pregnant with both pregnancy. Nothing happened. The doctor will either tell you not to eat it or to heat it up until its steaming hot.
