Chronically late people are disrespectful?

Here’s my (probably) unpopular opinion:

People who are chronically late to everything drive me crazy. I completely understand that it happens.. but the people who make it a personality trait, like “omg you know me! I’m never on time!” drive me insane. It’s not cute, it’s extremely disrespectful. Like, why is my time less important than yours?

Some of us have ADHD, OCD or in my case both, and it's quite literally something we CAN'T help. I legitimately try EVERY day. I get up before 4 every damn mornin and STILL will be late for a 9 am meeting! EVERY freakin time. My brain just doesn't construct time like a neurotypical person.

There is NOTHING more infuriating for me than someone saying "just get up earlier". 🙄 First, I don't think I CAN get up any damn earlier and TWO, having MORE time in the morning will only lead to me finding MORE things to do, making me MORE late.

A normal person will think hmmm, I got 10 minutes, I'm gonna eat real quick grab something and go.

I notice I have 10 minutes and think ooooh,, I'll make a poptart! I go to get the toaster outta the cabinet but when bending down notice the cats need food, go to get that and see the boys left their late night snack wrappers out, grab those, oh the trash needs to go out, reach under the cabinet for another trash bag, crap we're out, I better make a grocery list real fast, we need milk, bread, cereal, poptarts....oh YEAH, I wanted to eat a poptart....oh SHIT, WHAT TIME IS IT??!! We GOTTA go!! 🤯

Or something VERY similar EVERY day!

TRUST and BELIEVE it's JUST as frustrating for me and a HUGE insecurity that I just CAN'T ever "get it right", ESPECIALLY when such a deep seeded perfectionist. It's torturous. We don't wanna be this way, I PROMISE. I'll LITERALLY not sleep at night worryin over what or how that person felt by my bring late.

I WISH I could "just be on time" to avoid all that. 🥺

I struggle hard with this I’m late everywhere and try not to be. I’m up with ample amount of time but again my ADHD makes me feel I have more time then I do. I get it’s not everyone cases but some people are actually trying their best it just doesn’t work for them like it does for you just food for thought 😉

My former sister-in-law thought it was cute to be late and would laugh. But we learned….we would tell her every family function actually started and hour earlier than it actually did. She started showing up just in time for the real function time! Lol

I am imagine I just got scared straight then.

I was diagnosed with ADD back in 2009, and then again only eight months ago.

I was consistently 10 minutes to 15 minutes late everywhere I went.

But then my boss sat me down and literally reamed my ass.

Went off on me about how disrespectful I was being. The others were waiting for me to get there in order for them to leave to go home, and I was pretty much just saying that my time was more important than theirs.

For whatever reason, I totally clicked.

Now I’m not saying it’s my ADD that made me late to begin with. Could’ve been that I was only 21 (at the time when I was yelled at) and genuinely just young and stupid.

But it scared me straight. Now I’m always 20 minutes early, and I sit in my car and wait.

(Edit to add: that being said, I understand that not everyone with ADD/ADHD is on the same level, or has the same issues. Yours might be Time management, where as mine probably is more keeping the house tidy. I’m definitely not trying to explain away!❤️)

But like I said in my main post, *there are valid reasons*, but the ones who make it a personality trait are the ones I can’t handle.

“You know me! 🤪” person walking into a function that started an hour ago, while wearing a shirt that says ‘always late but worth the wait’, ya know?

And I also think there is a huge difference between 10 minutes late versus over an hour.

As well as it’s different when you’re late to work chronically, versus just late dropping off your kids at grandmas house.

But I’m gonna change the subject for a sec, completely ignore it if this is uncomfortable, but, are you on any sort of medication for your ADD that you absolutely love?

I actually have an appointment on 7th of December to talk about getting myself medicated. And I’m walking blind. I have no idea what to ask.

@jennatess Oh I've been yelled at more times than I can count. 😬

When I was first diagnosed I was put on Vyvanse but it made me feel weird. Now I take an extended release Adderall in the mornin and a lower dose instant release in the afternoon. It took a few months tryin to find the right one and dosage but helped a lot. I STILL can't be on time, but it's MUCH worse on the days I don't take my meds. 😬

I have ADD also, and an old boss screamed at me over my being late every day. Told me I was disrespectful, and wasting everybody’s time. That completely changed my tune. Now I have about four alarms set before any given time I have to leave. Now I’m chronically early, but for me, I would rather be early, set 25 alarms, and rush out of the house just to wait in my car than have somebody yell at me again.

Also, my wedding photographer told me that I was one of the only weddings EVER in his career to actually start on time. That’s how punctual and schedule-oriented I am. 💥

I tired this being the punctual person like I am… my own mother was late 30 minutes after the actual event. Remind you I even sent out invites with times... lol

That is me. If I'm not 5 minutes early and politely waiting in my car, then something has happened to me. Courtesty. It isn't difficult if someone has gone out of their way to include you in an event and you accepted.

I’m with you, girl. It’s sooooo disrespectful. For most people there is no justifiable reason for it other than they can’t possibly think of someone other than themselves.

I’m 90/95% with you, but I have a friend with various mental health disorders that really struggles with being on time and also people with adhd can struggle with the executive functioning skills necessary to get anywhere on time.

People that know that about themselves and act like it’s cute and funny do annoy me and I know people like that. But my friend with the mental illness is so embarrassed that she can’t seem to figure out “on-time” no matter how hard she tries.

Or they get extremely overwhelmed by everything they have to do and make the mistake of sitting down and don't do anything because they shut down!

I really wish people would research more on ADHD and not just follow the stereotypes

My daughter and husband definitely both struggle. I get annoyed because alot of people think ADHD only affects children. I can tell you that it still highly affects my husband.

They both have emotional dysregulation which is common with ADHD. While my husband's is more anger related , my daughter's is crying...but recently hers is becoming anger too. They also get told they just have anger issues 🙄

Ive thought about getting tested because my daughter is a literal mirror of me at her age.

My older friend, she's in her 60's, she is always late to everything. But her medical condition causes it. Think it's ADD or ADHD. And probably something else. She will just continue to do stuff around her house and not put it off to leave. I even worked with her. Always late. Any time we did something together always late. Mostly by an hour or more. She was late to my wedding and showed up when everyone was leaving the after party

Fun fact. I recently learned they don't consider add its own diagnosis. It's all ADHD just different types. You can have type 1, type 2 or combined type. I learned that they don't use add as its own diagnosis when my daughter was diagnosed

Yes! It is definitely a respect issue with me and I feel so bad if I’m ever the late one so I frequently overcompensate and spend a lot of time sitting in my car because I’m early. I hate the feeling of being late

What's annoying you at the moment?? Girls who blatantly claim, "I'm gonna use my looks to my advantage" really annoy me, and people who post political things on social media, also annoys me!
