Please don't wash meat. It has been washed soooo many times before it gets to you anyway. When you wash it you take the germs it has from only being on your cutting board to on everything in and (possibly) around your sink. Cross contamination at its finest. Nothing against anyone who does, but omg please 😖💗
Edit: 0% of chefs wash meat.
@two.tiny.texans @amouryaya09 @wittyusername We grew up with fresh and though we get store bought now we still clean it. But if you clean the store purchased and look at the water you will see the difference! The blood remnants on the under side of the legs and the blood clots that come out. The fat, the dirt even and the graying of the water when rinsed. The feather pieces left over. There are many reasons some of us stick to cleaning our chicken. And I will continue. No need to eat the blood clots and remnants that a simple rinse cleansing can rectify.
@wittyusername No ma'am. Far more comes off that chicken that just a few germs who are going to get killed with cooking. Also the chemicals that are pumped into and the gross "bath" the chicken is given before getting packaged. Unfortunately, cleaning doesn't get rid of all of it but it reduces the chemical consumption.
@xryztalroze oh wow, this is new info for me. I've never looked into how meat is processed honestly. If my folks were from a different region, I'd have a different way of doing it.
@wittyusername Well love, you and I have some great conversations on here and learn new perspectives from one another often. Look it up! They use chlorine and dip the chicken in chorine baths. Then they claim it's safe because most city water has chlorine in it. Well, if you think about it bleach is also chlorinated and it comes with a warning not to ingest or get on your skin. So we are killing germs with the chlorine baths but then consuming chemicals that are not natural for our bodies to have. So if we can wash some of it away I feel better for that. We, as a family, though we can afford to eat out, choose not to except on rare occasions. Certainly not now, but during normal circumstances. We are incredibly particular as to where we choose to dine. When I am working I don't have that option so I carry as much food with me as possible to refrain from eating out. I worked in restaurants as a teenager and was turned off from each one no matter how clean it was bc even the best restaurants have their "dirty secrets" and most people would be disgusted by them. As you know my family is multi-ethnic and multi-cultural so we tend to think differently than a family that has a shared experience. Ours is a mixture of experiences and views. My mil and I have shared ideas with one another that neither of us have thought of alone. It's amazing how different and similar everyone is depending on place of origin.
By the way, I hope you and little man are doing well! Hadn't heard from you in awhile and with the name change I now know why. Lol. Have a blessed night!!!
@xryztalroze @amouryaya09 I don't get why plucking feathers or removing skin would cause a need to wash the meat? I can pluck and remove whatever without washing it. I get that this whole discussion may not be applicable to those unable to get packaged meats, I'm only talking about grocery store meat.
Most of the time it’s done by while cleaning the meats. What I’m saying it’s that it’s being taught by generation. So even though it’s not the same situation that is what is being taught and it’s normal to a lot of people.
It's that parents teach their children what they know, even though they're in places that they are less likely to come across meat that actually needs to be washed, it's the old habit that they haven't shook.
It may be cultural. My husbands family cleans their meat with lime and vinegar from when they didn’t have access to packaged food. I understand what the CDC and chefs say to do. Feathers need to be plucked from chickens a lot of the times too.
Yes! This is accurate. My mil is even more detailed than I am and we both grew up in different countries/cultures. She is very particular. And those darn feathers must go!!!
@xryztalroze, mine is too! Super clean and particular! If she sees anyone half assing or not doing things the same she does she will refuse to eat. 🤣
Idk I wash my meats with lime or vinegar. That’s how I was taught! I leave the lime or vinegar for about 10 minutes and then wash it off.
Bleach is very effective at disinfecting and sanitizing. I wouldn't encourage anyone to wash meat, but if people are washing meat, bleach kills germs. Cross contamination becomes an issue when surfaces aren't properly cleaned
Yea I’ve never washed my meats. I didn’t even know it was a thing until I saw my bil do it and I was like what the hell are u doing haha. It’s getting cooked so why would anyone rinse it? So weird to me
I had a friend tell me about it and it blew my mind. Like, what? I still have never actually seen anyone do it though
@two.tiny.texans Come visit. I'll show you. Lol. My mil is the food cleaning dictator. She told me two days ago she only eats food from my house and hers and I know it's true. It took her years to finally eat my food bc she is incredibly particular. But as a whole we have never had a food borne illness in our family and that's the most important thing, right?
If you use a proper method you can absolutely wash meat safely. Cross contamination is nothing to play games with and is a very serious matter. There is a huge difference between chicken rinsed in vinegar and chicken straight from the package. Rather than saying not to wash meat ever I'd rather see someone teach the importance of safe food prep/handling and explain why safety measures should be taken.
I hope that didn't come off bitchy, this post or my reply wasn't meant to be rude or mean at all
@two.tiny.texans No ma'am. You're ok, just expressing your experience. I make sure to keep all surfaces clean and disinfected while also keeping all meats separate from one another and other foods. Washing hands between and making sure any and all surfaces used are disinfected before prepping the next food type. I use separate cutting boards, knives, etc. We can actually tell the difference between my cleaning and my mils cleaning the chicken. She is much more detailed and will not eat my food if I haven't used her method. She can taste the difference without knowing. Red meat I rarely clean but chicken I absolutely do. Often chicken will still have skin and feathers and needs extra care.
@two.tiny.texans I've found that washing the meat is a cultural thing, where people who don't really have access to properly cleaned meat I imagine, take this step to remove debris with vinegar or lime/lemon juice. So I'm assuming your courses were in the US, so there would be no need to teach this
Yesterday I went out with my boyfriend went to watch a movie, me and him don't live together yet. but point is yesterday when he was dropping me off his like sleep over at my house witch the mom and dad lives. I said no,
his response was why is everyone deciding or making choices for you and their going to do the same with the baby, when I know that's not true. what he thinks is that my mom tells me not to sleep over. So he left all mad. and I felt in my heart that he went on and cheated on me...

Transgender children
So I just learned that in my kids school district (my kids aren't in school yet my oldest will be starting kindergarten next September) there are twin boys who identify as girls. They are 5 years old. What's your opinions on this matter given they are 5!!! I don't believe that at that age they really understand the whole thing. So the entire school had to take a course on how to handle transgender children. For example they can't say girls go this or boys do that. What are...
