This isn’t something that I’m completely comfortable being open about, but I really need some encouragement. Can any of you mamas that have been prescribed medication for PPD tell me how you reacted to it? I’ve dealt with depression on and off for years, but I’ve never taken anything to get it under control. I’ve never liked the idea of taking medication to help me mentally, but at this point I’m so desperate to feel better because nothing has been working. After having my second daughter in September my depression has been spiraling out of control, to the point where it’s constant & is not giving me a break. I’m really nervous that it’s going to do the complete opposite of what it’s supposed to do, but I know I have to atleast try this out because I need to put my health first right now. I’ll take any advice.

I have tried lexapro, zoloft and am currently taking prestiq.

Do whatever you need to do to feel better. You wouldn't hesitate to take medical to treat other medical conditions. Why should this be different?

I'm terms of side effects I have had an upset stomach when first adjusting to the dose but this subsides very quickly. The only other side effects I have experienced has been to do with stopping and starting medication suddenly instead of tapering off (not medically advised).
It may take time to find what is right but zoloft is very good and the most researched in terms of pregnancy / breastfeeding.

Look into therapy to compliment your medication - this is key to success. Currently doing compassion based cognitive behaviour therapy and it really helps me to realise that this is not my fault and there are ways you can manage.

Always here to chat if you need. I have had anxiety my whole life and struggled terribly with post partum depression after my son was born. Xx

I had PPD and was prescribed Zoloft (genetic name is Sertraline). It helped immensely, and that was at a low dose. It took me quite a while to admit that I needed to seek help, and my PCP was so kind about it. I didn’t have any horrible side effects, and honestly started feeling like a human again. Good luck hun, I know this is a big step.

That's what I was prescribed, too. I have no complaints about it and feel so much better. I remember sitting on the exam table that day while my doctor read a letter about what my family has gone through in the last 18 months and she was incredibly supportive and gave me a big hug. I am not much of a hugger, but I appreciated it that day. I just didn't want to live that way anymore, but it was SO hard to reach out.

I wasn't prescribed PPD meds, I was prescribed depression meds after my 3rd miscarriage (one that I paid for out of pocket IVF with a genetically perfect embryo that my doctor was stunned when his heart stopped beating.)

My best advice is to take the medicine as prescribed and really give it a chance to work. Don't over think it and look for side effects. My doctor basically told me to expect it to help lift the depression enough to be able to get more done, be less overwhelmed, and face issues that are leading to my depression. It has truly helped me during this time as I sort out the next stage of my life and accept that I am not going to have more babies.

Always here to talk! The absolute hardest part is over, the part where you reach out for help.
