I'm looking for mom's with boys to answer this please. (: By the age of 2, how was your son's vocabulary? Like word wise, were or are they making complete sentences? How many words are they saying...etc
My first boy was making small 2 word sentences like want juice. My second was not speaking a lot just a few words here and there and he is currently in speech therapy once a week and doing a lot better.
How old is the one that's in speech therapy when did you start him in it?
@shannamarie, my son at 2 was not making whole sentences I could only understand a few words. Would say right now he’s speaking actual like complete sentences when we can have a whole conversation. He is in preschool now and I really think that has helped him out as well.
My 2 year old says so many words. And puts a few words together. We just talk to him like a big person lol Explain/narrarate everything... and a lot is still jibberish.
@momsrmagical see a few months ago though he was saying other words. Like Rawr, cheese, and ball now he doesn't say those at all
@shannamarie and that's okay he knows those words and that's a good thing. He will pick it back up he's just going through a little speech regression if you will kind of like potty training regression which is normal. At 18 months and a little boy it usually takes longer. He will be fine just keep working with him and he will eventually take off talking. But I warn you once they do they don't stop!!! 🙉
@shannamarie don't be worried. He will talk soon. It's like one day they aren't talking and then it seems they just start over night.
All of mine have been very early talkers with a wide vocabulary. I watch 2 toddlers and they are almost 3 just now putting 2-3 word sentences together.
What type of things did you do with your kids for them to be that way?
@shannamarie, nothing.....that’s just natural! My youngest was the hardest to understand. But I am a stay at home mom, I just talked to them. I do the same with the 2 I watch and it didn’t make a difference. Every kid is different!
Our ped said something very reassuring regarding amount of words to me, despite my son going on to be diagnosed with a speech disability. She said it’s truly not the amount of words that matter, but that there is consistent progression in gaining words. My son lost all his words at 18 months and was only making animal noises at 2. He’s been in speech since his 2nd birthday and has made so much progress! You’d never know he’s got a disability.
Yeah, that's my worries because he was saying words like cheese, ball, Rawr a couple months ago... I mean he'll say like mom and dad.. and mumble thank you. I'm just paranoid.
@shannamarie, so much can change between now and 2. Just keep encouraging him to speak and make noises. You have to walk before you run, same thing with taking. If he won’t say full words, start with sounds. For example, if he wants a ball from you, don’t give it to home until he says the b noise. And if there’s still concerns at 2, have him evaluated for speech. Most places don’t charge for the initial eval.
My sons talking like nothing trying to have conversation but in his own way lol he can say a few good words n put them together
Every child is different. My daughter is just now making full sentences. She chose not to talk at all until after she was a yr and a half old. So I wouldnt worry unless it seems hes struggling. Just give him a bit of time.
My son said very few words at his 2 yr appt. his dr kept asking if we wanted to do speech therapy. We said we wanted to wait a little bit longer. He started picking up words so rapidly and is now speaking in short sentences. He just needed a little bit more time.
My oldest was a very early talker. Full conversations at 2 years old whereas my youngest is in speech therapy and making a lot of progress. Each kid will go about things at their own pace. Try not to compare him to others.
He started when he was about 1 and a half and he loves going and its helped a lot hes a little over 2 and a half now. It was a little bit before Thanksgiving last year. His pediatrician recommended him going.
