Is it normal for my 3 week old to sleep in one hour increments and feed every time he’s up? I was pumping and I had to give formula a few times to supplement. It’s like the minute he starts to fall in deep sleep he wakes himself up somehow. Ideas/thoughts/tips??
I know usually he sleeps about 15-17 hours and today he slept about 8..... I’m worried because I don’t want him to be overtired to the point where he just keeps himself up
@seyda, aw poor guy, I’d call and run it past a nurse or his Dr. just in case.
You should try to nurse him when he wants so that your supply can keep up with his growth spurt. Supply and demand so the more you put him to breast the more you’ll make.
There is a growth spurt around 3wks which could make him more hungry. Have you tried soothing him before giving a bottle? And how much are you giving him each time?
I have been! And he’s usually calm when I give him the bottle. At first it was 2.5 oz now it’s 3.0 oz sometimes 3.5oz. When we gave him formula the packet was 4.0oz and he finished almost all of it. (Maybe about .25 left)
Will me feeding him every hour affect his sleep since he wakes up every hour to feed?
@seyda, his sleep schedule will be a bit wonky because he’s waking so often from being hungry. But after the spurt he could go to sleeping well.
My son nursed every hour until he was 4 months old. Is your son able to latch?
Yeah, at 3 weeks it’s a growth spurt. I don’t remember the ounces for that age but it sounds like that’s what’s going on. As far as the sleep goes, I think the total amount of sleep is what matters at this age if I remember correctly. Not how long the stretches are especially during a growth spurt.
