5 months and two weeks. He was able to sit up with some support and he was interested in what we were eating. Those were the signs I looked for in my son. Pediatrician said 4 months but he wasn't ready then. I think we moms know best when the right time is!
It depends on the baby and the style of weaning. With baby led weaning (skipping purees and giving baby finger sized finger foods) the baby needs to be sitting unassisted and have a pincer grasp which usually happens around 6 months or later. Traditional weaning (starting with purees and working up) isn’t as strict and a lot of moms start introducing rice cereal or other purees between 4-6 months when they start showing interest. Some will say that it’s safest to wait til 6 months because their guts just aren’t ready but others argue there’s no credible science behind that claim. :)
