Question! Married or not.. do you believe your child should have their father’s last name or the mother’s? Currently a debate between me and my mom right now.

Married so my son has my husbands last name, we all have the same last name. However even if I wasn’t married as long as the father is going to be a part of the baby’s life then baby should have dads last name. If you aren’t with the dad then give them your last name.

I don't think it really matters. Growing up I had my dads last name and my sister had my mom's last name. (we have different dads) I hated it, I just wanted to have my mom's name and I was so jealous of my sister lol. I wasn't close to my dad so it felt weird to have his name. Not every kid is going to be like that of course but that's just my experience.

Sorry I’m snooping lol😂 but my son will have my name for the simple fact that I am only 19, and his father and I aren’t married(we’re together just not married) but we decided that if we do happen to get marry that we’d change my son and my name to his.

It just depends. My fiancé wants us all to have my last name because he wants that feeling of a family unit. And I know personally, my mom regrets giving my sister and I our father’s last name because he’s been absent

Personally I chose the fathers name even when we were not married with the 1st 2 kids. My dad though signed his rights away with his first child and she got her mothers name whereas my little half brother got his mothers name and my fathers.(hyphenated)

I personally wouldn't ever give our kids my name....but that's just me to each their own

Good question....

My son has my last name ( only because I want my mother last name to keep going and I was slightly being a bitch) But our daughters ( due with baby girl number 2 January) They have there dad last name. I wish I would have given our son his last name now.

But at that time I was going through the worst thing possible. So I really wasn't in my right mind.

Not married and both of my kids will have their fathers last name. But I can see how you if you weren't with the father it would be a different story

For me it would depend on the relationship with the father. If he’s not present or doesn’t care to be... then no. I’d want my baby to have my name. Not the name of someone who chose not to be around. Otherwise, I wouldn’t see a reason for them to not have either name. But personally I’d like for us all to have the same name. My best friend, her fiancé and her daughter all have separate names. Gets really confusing on paperwork.

I like tradition when it comes to that. A father takes pride in his last name and carrying it on through their children. If he’s a deadbeat then I would not give the child his last name so he has to fight for any rights to the child if he later decides to. My Grandfathers mother gave him her maiden name instead of his dad so we didn’t even find out until recently what other family we had or who we really belonged to.

Also.. I didn't want my daughter to struggle with last names like I did and STILL do.. people think one or my last names is a middle name and when it comes to certain things that can be a huge problem

Not sure. I have both my parents last names. But to me if I plan on being with(marrying) the father then why not give the child his last name ?

But don't feel pressured to make a decision you aren't sure of yet

my parents never married, me and my two siblings have my dad's last name. My mum said we can change our last name to hers if we wanted too but it's up to us, our parents split up with I was a teenager.

My partner and I are not married and both our children have his last name. We are planning on getting married later in life :)

My SO and I aren't married, we discussed what we wanted and since neither of us cared in particular we decided to give our son his last name because my SO is the only one in his extended and nuclear family that can carry on their last name. However because things have been rocky between us I did tell him that if we do end up splitting up that he will have my name because I would be the primary care taker. It's up to you don't let anyone pressure you!

My son doesn’t have his bio fathers lastname because he had no involvement, so he has mine.

Personally believe they should carry the fathers. With that being said, I have my mother's maiden because my father signed his rights away. I told my (POS) boyfriend that our daughter would have his name out of respect, and if he wanted to sign his rights away and change her name to mine that I was perfectly okay with that and there were no hard feelings. I think that her carrying his name is my "duty" to give him that honest opportunity to make his choice the type of man and father he wants to be.

My oldest has my maiden name. I was no longer with his father when i gave birth and we weren't on good terms at the time. My younger 2 have my husband's last name.

TBH its all up to the couple. I hated my maiden name and since we're married and I have a brother to carry on my maiden name we chose our married name for our daughters last name but I also know people who have heighened both last names either bc they wanted to create a last name or they weren't actually married yet, no judgement there. I've also known people to legitimately make up a last name. Essentially you can name your kid whatever the hell you want. Just as long as both parties compromise. It's all good.

My oldest have their dads but my two youngest mine, my 3 year old was by choice because her dad is a pos, my youngest would have had his dads had he been in the states and present to sign will probably switch it once he’s back.

I also don't think it matters, like I would have rather put his last name as his dad's, but thanks to the paranoia from my mother yeesh

I am not married, my son has my last name, but now I'm stuck with this where I'm not sure if i want to give baby 2 father's last name, albeit they have the same dad lol. I was just going to wait til we were married but to each their own. You can even do both last names if you want

My baby has her dad's last name and we aren't married idk I just feel it's only right if you guys are together and he's gunna be helping you raise your child. If we weren't together and he wasn't going to be in her life then I wouldn't give my baby his last name.

I believe it’s up to the parents. I would have given my son my fiancé’s last name whether we were together or not though.

I’d say it’s personal preference. My daughter has mine and so will my son. I’m not with my ex anymore either. Funny enough, my ex and his brother have their mom’s maiden name even though their parents are still married. I like to say I kept the tradition going.

I believe it doesn't matter which last name a child has. My oldest has my last name. While my youngest has her dad's last name. My cousin's daughter has a combination of both last names.
