Hi :) Can anyone offer some possibilities or advice?

Pediatrician told me 2 days ago my 8 week girl hasn't gained enough weight since her last appointment (at 5 weeks old). That she seems developmentally great mentally, movement, head circumference and height. That she's not scrawny. But that she needed to gain 20oz, not just 4oz. I'm told to supplement with formula.

I'm confused since earlier when I was told her weight was great, my milk production definitely has gone up, her latch way better, and I put her to my breast way more often during the day. Less trapped gas. Her feedings even seem to be more efficient since she swallows more.

She still falls asleep at some feedings or fusses for burps or for me to prop her up to look around. I try to bring her back to feed right away after being distracted or asleep but sometimes she still refuses.

She won't nibble as much and will be more mostly awake during a bottle feed so that does help. But I'm confused whether is it my milk production or something up with her?? I can give her a supposed full breast session and still she will swallow 2 to 4oz formula after!

Any help is appreciated! Thank you!

@rocsiali, just a thought...pace feeding is key look that up. My son wasn't drinking four ounces until four months so two ounces seems like enough to me 🤷🏼‍♀️ but every woman has different calories and fat in their milk so maybe supplementing is good

Great news! Alena is back in her weight percentile yesterday! Not so great news, doctor said my pumped milk of 2oz at a time doesn't seem like enough (said I should be able to pump 40z at a time) so that may explain why alena dropped in her percentile until I supplemented with formula again?

I pump between feedings to increase production and make sure alena gets the fatty hind milk. But if she nurses (sucks) correctly, then she would get more than what is pumped out at a time.

So still kind of confused...

In 24 hr period, she 5-10oz of formula. 10oz bottled breast milk, sometimes more. And takes the breast in between for feeds and nibbles.

During daylight and early dark hours, she has two 2hr naps. The rest of her naps are short between 15-45min.

At night her naps are 4 hrs at a time until 7 or 8am.

I can switch to decaf tea and coffee to help production and less nicotine , plus more water.

I'm thinking of just feeding breast milk for 1 or 2 weeks then getting her weighed at dr to see. I would think that if she's acting fine and growing great for height and head that what's the problem if she drops in growth curb but she dropped from 25th percentile to 10th percentile so that makes me want to continue supplementing before her being behind in other measures occurs!

Lots of good advice. I just wanted to share what my pedi always went by. He doesn’t get concerned and unless the baby loses weight.. 🤷🏻‍♀️ You’re doing good. Try to keep her awake or make sure she is awake when she eats. I used to talk to my son and sing when he was that little.

Your supply is probably perfect. Your supply follows her demand. Some babies are just tiny, and every baby is different. You’re doing good. 💕

How about pumping milk instead of supplementing with formula? If you have a scale at home weigh yourself then add baby on and see how much she weighs so that way you can personally keep track. You can also do this before and after feeding her. So you can know. But remember each time to weigh yourself first

I believe a lot of doctors don't know what the hell they are talking about with breastfeeding

Make sure you nurse her for at least ten minutes on one side...lactation told me the fattier part of the milk usually takes about ten minutes into the feeding. The watery milk is in the beginning. Maybe that's the issue. I wouldn't supplement honestly. Just keep trying

Are you pace feeding? 4oz of formula after a breastfeed is way too much. You’ll stretch her belly and harm your breastfeeding relationship. Before supplementing, I would go see a Lactation consultant.

I agree with Kambam. There’s a stigma that babies should plump up fast and eat a ton and that’s just not the case all the time, especially for breastfed babies. Most pediatricians are not good with breastfeeding and give advice that harm the breastfeeding relationship.

@tnsad She's not vomiting. Sometimes spits up. The spit up is usually an amount I've seen in other healthy babies.

@lillynellasmom Instead of pumping past few weeks, I wake her up or pick her up to feed instead when I'm leaking. I can try pumping again when I'm not leaking to stimulate more milk flow though. I'll also try feeding her without her sleep sack/clothes/blanket on. I hope there's not an uncontrollable milk fat issue! I'm very happy you and your little one got through jaundice! Thank you for your advice :)

@kambam I wouldn't be surprised if a pediatrician to do that but I hope they aren't! Yes she makes what I'm told are within average range of diapers and hasn't made extra than her normal lately to mean she's losing fluids or nutrients. She's a very happy little girl. Supposedly the chart is based on her personal growth rate based on her birth weight, and she has dropped percentiles, indicating her growth rate has slowed. I'm going to try some breast feeding advice and supplement with formula for only partial day meals and see how that goes. Thank you :)

Does she vomit at all?

She will gain it might just be slower than some babies. If shes happy and making plenty of diapers theres no concern. Pediatricians like to push the growth charts 🙄 keep nursing on demand 👏

When you are breastfeeding her have her naked and no blanket just a kind of wake her up and not go to sleep I know my daughter would do that too and lactation consultant said to do that they keep her up since she was really jaundice when I had her. Also your milk might not be or have enough fat so when she eat she's burn it off faster. Instead of giving her formula if you have a pump just pump it and then see if she'll take it from a bottle so you're still giving her your breast milk. Hopefully that helps a little
