Am is starving my baby by breastfeeding?!

Am is starving my baby by breastfeeding?!

So I have been slightly worried about my baby lately. And today it hit me what the problem may be. Or maybe I’m overthinking it. When I bf my daughter she gained weight beautifully. Such a chunk by 2 months. My son on the other hand still is scrawny but has gained. He was born a whole pound less than what she was. And at his last appointment the dr was only slightly worried because his growth curve/percentile had actually went down. He is a small fry and at the 4% for his weight compared to other babies his age. So I remembered this story about a woman who talked about essentially starving her baby by breastfeeding unknowingly. So I started researching symptoms and think it may be the same situation I am in just not as severe. This is such a blow to me. I want to bf my sweet boy but I think it’s time to throw in the towel and convert to formula. I have noticed the past few days he has just cried and cried I thought it was from his shots or from gas. Until today he would just be content on the boob but start crying as soon as he was off. And this went on for hours. So I thought to myself let’s try some formula and boom. He sucked it down and has been content ever since. It clicked he has just been hungry this past week. 😭😩 why did it take me this long to notice?! Then I looked up signs of this happening and he met some. I feel awful. I really thought our breastfeeding journey was going great. Please tell me I’m not alone on this.

One of my friends told me that her dr told her to switch to formula because they tested her breast milk and it ended up not having enough calories for her baby.

@lizzyh7741, see that makes me wonder. My milk looks fine but idk. I have just decided to bottle feed. Fed is best and the other day while I was away from him my mom fed him formula and he was so content. I just feel bad it took me this long to figure it out.

Each baby is different if your baby is having the amount of peed diapers and pooped diapers he should be having you are feeding him enough, if there is no concern with the doctor everything is just fine. My daughter was exclusively breasted and smaller In her percentile but after the year she just sprouted lol. Don’t feel discouraged you are doing an amazing job.

@alyssa5792, I agree !!! As long as baby is gaining ! He isn’t starving . Nurse on demand , do not watch the clock you will drive yourself crazy . You don’t have to supplement unless you want to . Some Pediatricians will tell you anything (that’s when you get a new one ) see a Lactation consultant before anything . But if baby is gaining I see no problems . Just nurse on , you must move milk in order to make it . Supply and demand. You got this momma 😘😘

Thanks ladies! I think I’m gunna try and supplement a little instead of just completely stopping. I have pumped and don’t get a whole lot. Typically 2-3 oz combined last time I pumped a few weeks ago. And dr said baby should be eating more than that by now. So I still wanna give him the benefit of my milk so I think supplementing a few times as needed will help. I appreciate your help!!💕

@alyssa5792, it’s so awesome ! My pediatrician as well ! I’ve read so many things about these doctors telling moms to start solids at 3 months !!! A friend of mind started her baby on cereal and the purées at 3 months and I just couldn’t believe it . My pediatrician told me I can introduce solids at 6 months , and by introduce she meant just that , not try to replace the breastmilk . I’m gonna start baby led weaning at 6 months

@tiera_shaye, at least you were able to figure it out and your baby boy is very adorable! My son was born 7.14lbs and still till this day he is a slow growing boy. He is now 2 and is still wearing 12 month clothes but the dr has said he’s growing a bit faster now so now it’s time to shop for better fitting clothes for him and also my baby girl. She’s a little piggy lol. She’s only 4 months old and is wearing 9 month outfits

@mommysupreme, @alyssa5792, that saying does make me feel better. It’s true someone has to be at the bottom. I guess he is just so different from my daughter. She is at the very top, 98% actually and has been most of the time and poor Kye is at the very bottom.

As for baby led weaning, go for it! I did my own version of it and I wish I would have done more of it the recommended way. I plan on doing it with my son. I figured with her I would just wing it and we had the issue of her not knowing how to bite/chew properly because I always tore food up into tiny pieces for her. So this became a huge issue as she got teeth and got older. It took some time but she got it finally lol.

And the cereal thing. I can say I am guilty of starting early. 😬 as a first time mom my daughter was eating so much and I couldn’t satisfy her hunger. So at 3 months I tried some cereal and she loved it. So I would only do it once a day for awhile. But by 4-4.5 months she was also eating baby food at least 1x a day. I didn’t do it 3x a day until later. This kid was and still is a tank when it comes to eating. Then again she has always been a kid that is wanting to do more way too young. She didn’t stay a baby long. She would bring a spoon to her mouth at 4 months and has been using forks and spoons since 10-11 months. My son is total opposite, he just wants to stay a baby and I’m ok with that.

@alyssa5792, there are so many things that are pointing to him not being satisfied. 😩. His just isn’t cut and dry like it was with my daughter. With her i could tell she just needed more and I couldn’t keep up so I did formula and bf as I could and eventually only at night. With him. He eats and eats and is so mad and fussy after so I do everything I can then it comes back to him wanting to eat again. It’s not like this all the time. It just started the last idk week. And once I gave him formula he has been so content and the happiest little peanut. So now I’m lost. Like is it my supply? My milk? (Because a few weeks ago we had issues with his poop being lime green, which can be a foremilk/hindmilk imbalance) or him maybe growing? Idk. Maybe I need to explore it a little more before just completely giving up. It’s just hard because like I said his issue whatever it may be isn’t so easy to see like it was with my other kid.
