Madi has been refusing her bottles recently. I think she’s about done with them. Her ped thinks she just prefers solids…

@laniejay, I totally get what you’re saying. and like I said I wasn’t trying to be nasty. i’m just frustrated honestly. this has been on going for 9 months now. I’m not trying to “replace” her bottles with solids i’m just thinking of a solution for right now while she’s teething to make sure she doesn’t lose weight. without the solids she would be getting pretty much nothing. i’m also making sure I mix the formula in with it and offering little amounts throughout the day. But since she was born early it’s been drilled in my mind since day one that she needs to gain gain gain and so that’s where my frustration comes in

Check out the fb and Instagram called “feeding littles” it’s run by a nutritionalist and feeding therapist. they have courses you can pay for broken up by age or you can just send them a message or scroll through their posts. They talk a lot about food/formula aversions, picky eaters, baby’s self regulation, etc. Hope it helps you a little 💕 It helped me a ton when I was nervous about starting solids with Kennedy!

@jtaylorg, he did not understand or like sippy cups. Still doesn't. The straw cups he took to almost instantly. The ones with weighted straws are good because she can drink at any angle.

She's probably refusing because she's teething. Poor baby. Keep offering her formula and solids. I think as long as she eats, that's what is most important.

And FYI- my medical needs child would never take 30 oz in a day either, adding solids would be counterintuitive because now belly is full of things they can’t process and that’s less formula or breastmilk. Nowhere did I say force her- I said do not replace it with solids.

@jtaylorg, you think I don’t understand it?? Do you know why I have my vast knowledge of infant nutrition? Do you know why I’ve studied it so intently?? Because I HAVE a child with feeding issues. I work with top nutritionist and GI’s in the nation.

This isn’t “my” standard. This is what SCIENCE and FACTS say.

If your daughter has an aversion- feeding therapists should be brought in to determine how to get her the correct and optimal nutrition. A pediatrician shouldn’t be touching it with a 10’ pole.

@laniejay, My daughter will never take 30oz a day. She is happy and content at 18-24. and while that might not be “your” standard, that’s what she’s happy with. she will not take more than that. for me to give her 30 oz a day would mean I have to force it down her. It’s responses like this that cause babies to have bottle aversions. Because someone tells them what they think they “should” be getting. every baby is different. and this isn’t me being nasty. But if you don’t have a baby with a feeding issue, you have no idea how stressful every day is.

Formula needs to be her main source of nutrition until at least one. She should be getting 30 or so ounces a day at this point.

Even though she has the ability to INGEST solids, she does not have the digestive enzymes to break down and process them. So she cannot absorb all she needs nutritionally. This is why the saying “food before 1 is just for fun” (although that’s just nutritionally, it he’s developmental benefits).

You need to make sure she is drinking all her formula until 1. A doctor that is ok with weaning formula is a dangerous doctor who clearly is not educated on infant nutrition.

She should really keep getting formula or breastmilk as her main form of nutrition until she's a year. Have you tried mixing it in to her foods? With my oldest I would add it to oatmeal, for example.

@nomli, we are in the process of trying to get her to understand the sippy cup but she’s not really getting it. and also since she’s teething she bites down on EVERYTHING. maybe i’ll try a straw cup. I spent all day watching tips and tricks to introduce a straw to baby

Maybe try switching to cups? Like, ones with a straw? He liked those. But at 9 months he was up to three meals a day, still drinking about four 8oz bottles.

@ashtonndamon, Ok gotcha. My daughter would never take an 8 oz bottle 😑 She doesn’t drink anymore than 4.5oz per bottle (on a good day when she’s not refusing)

@jtaylorg I always try to feed him a meal first. And he only gets bottles when he first wakes up in the morning or going to sleep(naps included)

My son is 10 months but we give him 2 meals everyday 3 somedays then he gets 3 bottles everyday.

We did blw so whenever I ate, so did my son. Breakfast, lunch, snack, and dinner.
