Short term disability in USA to extend maternity leave
What do I need to put or ask doctor to write into the STD forms so that I can get approved for it after delivery? My company offers 26 weeks at 70% pay but not sure how this works?? The paperwork says "doctor can certify a longer period under certain medical conditions " . What are those conditions??
I would definitely check with your employer. I'm on my third pregnancy and will be collecting STD both before and after delivery. I'm still 3 weeks out , and bc I'm no longer able to perform basic job duties due to pregnancy, I'm able to still collect it. I'm guessing this varying from job and State though.
My HR department required me to request a leave through them and then they send me the paper work of who I would go through for the STD. I contacted them and they faxed over all my paperwork to the doc to fill out. I get 6 weeks of paid maternity leave with STD unless I have complications that require a longer period of time and in that case I would contact the same company and they would send the doctor some documents to fill out stating I can't go back to work until this date. I would go ahead and contact your HR department and see if you can get this process started. Mine required me to get it going before I was due.
From what I understand, you can get short term disability payments for 6 weeks with a vaginal birth and 8 weeks with a cesarean. Contact the benefits department at your work and ask them for info. You cannot do anything prior to the birth of your baby. After he/she is here, you can call the STD department, tell them you just had a baby and you'll start receiving payments several weeks later.
That's awesome that your work is willing to pay 70%! My job pays nothing and the short term disability payments are a joke (I'm grateful for it, of course, but they still don't compare to my regular salary!)
My job is commissioned based so only money I'll get on maternity leave is STD. I signed up for it last year through work. When I found out I was pregnant I contacted HR and she had the company the provides the STD (they also do our life insurance policy) call me and I could ask her how it all worked. I get some form from my doc that I turn in and after so many days it will "kick in" and I'll start getting my $$.
