I have my 16 week appointment on Friday and I’m wanting to do a gender scan or blood work to find out the gender a bit early. I know the gender scan wouldn’t be covered by insurance due to it technically not being a necessary ultrasound but would the blood work be covered by insurance? And would I be able to ask for it at my appointment when I go in?
I waited the full 20 weeks for the gender scan with my first and didn’t ask about finding out early so I’m not sure how it works.
I think there generally needs to be a reason to warrant the blood work in order for it to be covered. Advanced maternal age, risk factors etc... it is certainly not a gender test but that is one piece of information that can be gathered through the blood work. My doctors office offered the Panorama test and the company capped it at $125 out of pocket if insurance didn’t cover all or any of it. It is usually done a good bit earlier than 16 weeks but I’m not sure if it can’t be done later
I found out at 10 weeks on my insurance, but I think Medicaid let me too

My insurance won’t cover anything that’s not medically necessary, which includes the test that would determine gender because it’s more so used for women over 35 in my clinic. They also won’t tell you the gender until after 18 weeks. I paid for an elective ultrasound for both my girls at a place that specializes in them and they won’t let you do the gender ultrasound until 16 weeks.
