I think two is a good age. When my son who is 21 months starts to pitch a fit we just tell him to go to him room and put himself in timeout. And he does for about two months now he has been going to him room and closing the door behind him and he cries it out and when he is finished crying he comes out of his room. We have tried other methods of discipline but honestly this is what is working the best for us
It depends on what your goal is. If you are trying to teach your child self regulation and emotional maturity then it's not a good option. If you're interested, there's a peaceful parenting chat that has alternatives to punishment based parenting.

I have a 2 and half year old and I put her in time out for 5min...sometimes it works sometimes it doesn't

I heard 1 minute for every year. So since he's 2, you can put him in time out for 2 minutes.
