NOTE: I have never had a food allergy so Iv never had to deal with them or the dangers so please keep that in mind when I ask this question.
At my sons school, if you bring anything with peanut butter to lunch you have to sit at a table in the corner of the cafeteria to keep other kids safe.
They used to provide free PP&J sandwiches for kids who had no lunch money but now they have gotten rid of that service and didn’t offer an alternative.
I know that food allergies are serious but I feel like that’s a little over board? Maybe not. I just wanted to hear opinions.
@iwannaplay, we have sheets to fill out about food allergies & dislikes at he beginning of the year. My son has 6 people in his class. All the kids have snack in their classroom so not to cross contaminate.
I understand what you’re saying but it doesn’t apply for my individual situation is all I’m saying
It’s not one schools send warnings for. Unfortunately when my daughter was in kindergarten I found out one of the kids was allergic to milk and some fruits by talking to the other moms waiting to pick kids up and at the drop off waiting for the kids to go into class. I would have never known otherwise the teacher didn’t even know just thought the kid was picky about eating
@iwannaplay, I get a list of acceptable snacks at the beginning of the year. So i was informed cheese crackers were okay. But if someone in the class had milk allergy I obviously wouldn’t send them
The reason they likely separate the kids with nut lunch because there are so few kids eating nuts and it’s easier to contain the oils to that one table since let’s be honest the tables probably aren’t cleaned very well. Just wiped down with sanitizing solution which doesn’t remove the nut oil residue. As this thread continued I watched it turn into let’s protect the nut allergy kids and offer snacks and lunches that harm milk allergic kids like my youngest. He will always take his own lunch since milk is in so much but class snacks I’d recommend you ladies do some research on the top food allergies and not send those snacks in for the class.
My school growing up had peanut butter banned, it is the most common nut allergy and the most deadly, so they just banned it to be careful. I'm surprised your kids school still allows it honestly. I used to think it was weird as a kid since it can't be removed from public as an adult, but adults are more prepared to deal with an allergy attack, so as an adult it makes more sense.
Our school had a program to feed every kid too, even if they were overdue on the lunch bill.. suggest cheese sandwiches to the school, that is what our school did
@melissaredfield87, lol same! For snack time I always send Capri Suns & Cheese Crackers
When my kids where younger they had parties at school but Parents where not allowed to bring in homemade items or anything that contained peanuts or wheat! I always sent capri suns lol
When I worked in daycare there was no peanut butter or nuts of any kind allowed. Some children are severely allergic I used to tell my parents try jelly and banana sandwich’s to replace the peanut butter
My school never did that and no one died sooo I think it is extreme. But maybe I’d feel differently if my kid had an allergy. I do think not offering an alternative was stupid. That’s all some kids get to eat sometimes.
At my sons school they have a different table where the kids WITH the peanut allergy sit. And for other alternatives I know they do a 1st to 4th lunch. With my son not eating pork he will choose 4th lunch which is always a yogurt, string cheese and whatever fruit and milk he wants. That’s crazy ur sons school doesn’t offer any alternatives. I’d go talk to the school cause they should be doing that.
@knockout, if you look, a lot of snacks are now labeled as “nut-free”. The daycare I worked for was nut free.
As much as I understand the concern with being allergic to things, IMO the children who are allergic should be the one at the separate table. You can’t punish the people/children who aren’t allergic to not letting them eat their favorite foods.
As for children who can get reacting by just smelling things - what do you do when it’s a pick up time and a mom/sibling of other children have it with them and the kid smells it. You can’t prevent that.
So yes. Provide safe environment for the allergic children by giving them separate lunch area. Don’t restrict the other children. Equal rights go both ways.
Hearing that a kid can have life threatening reactions to just smelling peanuts makes me wish they would just completely ban it from all lunches and snacks. That’s terrifying I couldn’t imagine getting a phone call like that
I’d do some studying about allergies like this
Some kids have an anaphylactic reaction and have a hard time breathing.
My son used to be allergic and he would have a terrible rash and runny nose. Thankfully, his allergy was not that bad and he’s now fine eating peanut butter. It took a few years for him to outgrow the allergy. Some kids never outgrow it and end up in the hospital if it’s around them. I feel so bad for them.
The school should provide something else as an alternative, not do away with the whole program though!
@jneill_bb, @lpheartsyou, I agree. I wasn’t aware until this year that they don’t offer a free lunch option anymore besides bread and butter (which isn’t a lunch)
Last year my son was In 1/2 day preschool so he only ate breakfast at school. This year he will go a full day but I just plan on never sending anything with Peanuts in his lunch.
@knockout yeah I honestly didn't realize that until my baby shower with my first son, she was there and my aunt had just finished cleaning things with an orange scented cleaner and my friend had to leave the house for a while
@ladyblauvelt.skysmomma, that’s so scary! I can’t even imagine 😱
The first part is kinda iffy about sitting at a different table, but I don’t agree with the second part. Every child should be offered some kind of food even if they don’t have lunch money. Make them a tuna sandwich or something! They deserve to eat too 🤷🏼♀️
It’s not because sooo many kids are allergic to the point where they can die. And if came down to a kid dying over my kid having peanut butter sandwiches for lunch then my kid is just going to have to deal with either eating whatever is provided or not at all and if that seems harsh oh well. I’d rather not have a family bury a child over it
I get where you’re coming from but I do know of a case where child ate pb and simply blew in the face of a child who was allergic and the child ended up needing an epi pen. Some allergies are really bad. Thankfully my child doesn’t show signs of any allergies right now but if he did, I’d appreciate what the schools are doing
Sometimes all it takes is just smelling it and kids can have a respiratory attack. I have a friend who is allergic to anything with citrus and if she just smells it she can hyperventilate.
Any mom with kids with food allergies or use to have allergies.
When your child had a food allergy did they grow out of their food allergy? If so when did you find out they had a food allergy and at what age did they grow out of it? I’m just curious 😊
One food you love most!
What's one food you can never get tired of eating.
So I keep feeling these lil sharp pains on my right side. You do get pains like that before you start your period right.? Remember I had that dark brown spotting for a few hours last month on the 22. My period suppose to start today.
Short Luteal Phase?
I've just started temping because I believe that the reason I haven't had a BFP yet, after 20 months, is because I believe I may have a Luteal Phase Defect.
@melissaredfield87, we can’t bring homemade foods either. I always thought that was so weird as a kid, but Iv seen some people’s kitchens and I would die if they brought homemade snacks 🤮🤢
