When is the soonest you can start pumping?

Days before labor

As soon as baby is born

Days after baby is born

Weeks after baby is born

Weeks after you want to establish a good milk supply it’s always about supply and demand ... and you definitely don’t want clog ducts they are the worse pain ever 😭😭

I’d say weeks after baby is born, pumping right away is setting yourself up for failure as you will produce way to much milk, baby won’t like it and it will be painful. Baby will stimulate your body to make enough milk for them, the pump will over stimulate. I have at least 4 people I know who failed at breastfeeding do to over producing because they started pumping too soon.

With my first son, he was in the NICU so I had no choice but to pump from day one even though it was just colostrum at that point. I think ideally you do not want to pump right away.

Every woman is different though so I would refer to a lactation consultant on when *you* should pump. I had an awesome one I was referred to by my old hospital. They are true professionals on the topic and can verify baby’s latch, your supply, suggest ways to increase supply if your milk is taking a long time to come in, etc. Keep one on saved in your phone to in case other questions come up. 🙂

I pumped right away with my first baby and had huge oversupply issues. It was a horrible cycle to be stuck in. With my second baby I waited 6 weeks and didn't have any issues. With my last baby, I breastfed on demand and never pumped.

Yeah it was hard for me at first. I had to do pumping and syringe feeding. The way my breasts are and his mouth was tiny, I could only feed him laying on my side!! I went to the best lactation specialists in town and they were amazing but really didn't help. I was so frustrated one day I just took my baby, layed down and he latched on I was like oh my godddd. If I ever go through the process again I'll be more knowledgeable of course. Just gotta keep trying and be patient sometimes @prestonjeanetta0120

@kambam, did you ever have a hard time getting baby to latch ? Cause that’s always was hard for me and nurses wasn’t that much help at all !! I been watching YouTube channels to see how everyone holds baby and latch and see if it’s something I haven’t been doing right in the past .

Well it's totally your choice. If you like doing it that way then more power to you because I could NOT handle pumping. The mom's who only pump are something else. Just going off my own experiences and research about the pumping though @prestonjeanetta0120

@kambam, well you know what maybe they did me like that because I have breast issues and milk takes longer to get going as well as keeping it going without using things to help my supply !! So that could just be why they had me pump and feed . But this time I think I want to just pump exclusively and stock my sister only pumps and she got a freezer full of milk just so my niece is good when going to out without

Yes Really! Not everyone will have an issue but doing so right away puts you at higher risk for oversupply, clogged ducts and mastitis. I also found it to be too stressful and it made it hard for me to bond with my son because I was worried about pumping, feeding schedules etc @prestonjeanetta0120

I pumped right away because my son refused to latch. Pumping early didn't cause an oversupply. In fact, my milk dried up without me even trying to. It's different for everyone.

You shouldn’t pump until at least 6 weeks after baby is here unleeeesss you’ll be away from baby for a feed. Baby is all you need in the beginning to establish your supply, hence why they nurse practically 24/7 in the first couple weeks.

Weeks after baby is born. I'd say SIX is ideal.

The more you put baby on boob and pump the faster your milk will come in . Even if your just going to pump start right away and keep at it to build supply

After you establish a good breastfeeding routine and regulate your supply. Pumping too soon can cause an over supply which can cause mastitis and you don’t want that

Right after baby is born , best for you to put baby to breast then pump right after

Have been swimming all day and walking! Took the girls to a beach like area and spent the day 😊 Since my mom will be keeping them for 2 weeks after babies born to give me a break 😭
