So I can't decide if dd needs a haircut. She has natural spiral curls and her texture is very "white people" (for lack of better words) despite being half black. In the back towards her crown her hair gets thicker but other than that it has been easy to comb through until recently. Over the winter it has gotten longer and has become a nightmare. I put leave in conditioner and a curl lotion that is supposed to help with frizz but despite this she always looks like I haven't combed her hair by the end of the day. Idk what to do. DF suggested getting a hair cut may help. Is this plausible??

I have curly hair that is white people texture 😉 Definitely not straight. I absolutely never, ever brush it when it’s dry otherwise it looks a hot ass mess. I comb it after my shower, put in my product, and let it dry. At night I “pineapple” it loosely with a scrunchie and sleep that way. I’m not sure if that’d be an option for her hair type?

"It's a 10" leave in conditioner and Johnson and Johnson baby shampoo is what I use on my LO. She has very fine curly hair. If I use regular conditioner it really weighs her hair down. A wide toothed comb is essential. Never ever brush curly hair unless it's soaking wet.

@massgirl, that’s great! I hated my hair until I found naturallycurly lol if it helps any I use Cantu conditioner (and their shampoo once or twice a week) and Kinky Curly Knot Today detangler for mine. Target should have them. They can be expensive but you don’t need much. Good luck finding her holy grails 💜

@snoestorm thanks so much for recommending that website! It was super informative and might help. I think she's somewhere between a 3a/3b. I also found a few products that I might try.

I have very curly hair (3B by Devacurl standards) so I know your pain. I absolutely love naturallycurly.com to find what works best for my hair. They have great articles and reviews. I think it would be helpful for you to learn about her curl pattern and go from there. I found Tigi Curls Rock Amplifier to be a holy grail for me. It keeps my curls together and frizz under control and you don’t need a lot of product. Another idea would be to add just a little bit of olive oil to her hair after bath time and braid it for bedtime.

My dds hair is like what you described and while I think a lot of the suggestions here are great, a trim really makes a huge difference. When her hair becomes impossible that’s when I know it’s time for a trim.

Why would she call her daughters curly hair “straight”? I understand what she’s saying about the different textures, it’s not that hard. Anyway, I too have very curly hair, and my suggestions are dry with a t-shirt (not a towel) put a leave-in of some kind in, I like Argan oil, comb through and then don’t brush again. You could braid it at night to help tame the tangles, that’s what I do with dd’s.

Like some have said sounds like her hair is loosing moisture. I have wacky hair. At least 4 different patterns with 3 textures. The roots and very end (even after a fresh cut) are straight. Then I have two areas of waves. Then between that curls (loose and spirl). I also have fine, kind of course then very course. Its also super thick. So my hair looses a lot of moisture. I put a light layer of coconut starting at the first wave pattern to my end and wrap it up in turben towel thing for the night (after every shower no matter what). Then rinse some in the morning. Its pretty moisturized after that. I also wash my hair 1 to 2 times a week so the nature oils can work their magic. Depends on how dry it is. Then once every 2 to 3 month I quickly run a flat iron threw my hair (not bone straight) so my oils can work their way to the bottom and after do coconut and deep conditioning treatments. These work for me.

Maybe it's not best to leave her hair out? When you mist and moisturize it in the morning, maybe you could braid her hair or twist it or put it into scrunchies and barrets and then twist or braid the hang time. It seems like her hair might be losing moisture quickly, so styling it this way could help hold moisture in longer

My daughters hair is exactly like this. I am half black and she is only a quarter. I get her hair soaking wet then add the leave in at night. Do as ek suggested and pineapple it.(which I do to my own) I don’t ever recommend brushing curly hair ever! Use a wide tooth comb or only your fingers and only do it while wet with product in it. In the morning I would wet her hair again. And add the curl cream. Also I don’t know how often you are washing her hair but I wouldn’t do it but twice a week with a curly girl friendly shampoo n conditioner.

I mist it with water and detangler to comb it in the morning the add the curl creme. I've tried curl gels and mousse but she always looks greasy mid day

You never want to brush curly hair when it’s dry. I have “white people hair” that is wavy/curly. I only brush it when it’s wet. If I brush it when it’s dry it’s a nightmare. I agree that she needs more moisture to her hair.

Try a tiny bit of coconut oil in the ends. Not too much or it will look greasy/wet but it is amazing for taming curls

She doesn't have straight hair so idk why I would call it that 🙄...she doesn't like to wear her hair up so I usually pin it back or put head band in it. I'll try brushing through it twice a day. I'll try putting it up too at night because in the morning she has the WORST tangles. I also recently introduced a satin pillow case hoping that would help the frizz. Trimming will be my last resort.
