Top picture is of a 22 month old who has sucked his thumb since birth. His back teeth are all the way together but as you can see his front teeth don’t even touch. This is called an open bite. It will only get worse unless he were to stop sucking his thumb now.

Bottom picture is of a 3 year old child who sucked a pacifier until her first birthday. Her bottom jaw is a little pulled forward but overall not to bad. Great spacing and all her teeth touch.

This post is not bashing anyone. I know we do what we can to stay sane as parents and if that means letting them suck their thumb so be it. This post is just to put out some awareness especially to new moms. Just remember a thumb can’t be taken away so it may cause you a bigger headache in the long run and could cost you a good chunk of change at the dentist.

I hope nothing I’m saying is coming off as judgement. I know things don’t always translate through text. Both my 3 and 8 year old shad pacis until 1 year old. And I’m not against whatever you need to do as a parent just sharing some knowledge from first hand experience in the dental field and child care giver.

@curious.george, obviously there are exceptions to everything. 🙄 we should just be mindful that things can happen without any influences so why add in an influencer. Does that make sense?

@fuhgeddaboudit, I think pacis do less damage. Maybe because they are soft and collapse down and a thumb has a bone so the thumb stay bigger in the mouth. Or maybe since the thumb is attached the thumb is sucked on more than a pacifier would be? 🤷🏻‍♀️

I had mine paci till I was 5. Straight teeth no open bite or anything like that. My brother never took one or his thumb and he's got an overbite crossbite and sonething else. Genetics play a major part. It is nice to see an actual picture though opposed to people just stating it

@boymamachronicles, my 3 year old tried to suck her thumb so every time she put it in her mouth I would pull it out and offer a paci. It took about a month but finally she stopped putting her thumb in her mouth. And then I took her paci away at 1 year old. My 9 week old has never tried for her thumb and isn’t a fan of pacis so we will see!

My 1yo only has his paci when he sleeps now but I think it's starting to cause an open bite. His top teeth arent even all the way down yet and think the paci is keeping them from doing so. I have never had a kid dependent on a paci like this. Need to stop it soon!

@lmtreleven, not all kids will need braces. And yes genetics plays a slight role but the 22 month old pictured above has a brother with almost Perfect teeth. Thumb sucking definitely was a downfall for this child and something like 75% of thumb sucking toddlers suck their thumb through elementary years(so permanent teeth) and thumb sucking or pacifier sucking that long could even require jaw surgeries and extensive palette spacing techniques. About 45% of kids who get braces actually need them. So that means 55% get them for cosmetic reasons. Children with open bites could struggle with speech and eating problems. My point to the post was to hopefully make moms aware of the long term problems. And that trying to get a kid to stop will be harder and more costly than just stopping it from the beginning.
