@candice1234 He is smart, but he is also operating with a very underdeveloped brain. All 1.5 year olds are. Popping his hand clearly isn't working and there are many alternatives that will. We have all been at our wits end. I know I've been there more than once! I will post a link to the parenting chat if you'd like to join.

@candice1234, he trusts you that’s why he seems more hard headed. You’re his safe person. He’s still VERY young. Keep redirecting him, it’s not going to work every time but it’s honestly the thing that works best at this age. By “popping” his hand you’re just showing him we hit when we’re frustrated. Toddlers are naturally defiant, lower your expectation just a little bit.

I have done the redirection and other forms I understand that he won't listen to much at this time but there is a difference when I tell him no and his father tells him the same thing. It's always a game when Mon does it. I don't abuse my child he is just super hard headed with me

@caiticat I said I pop him not hit. It's not hard enough to do damage just to make aware.

I agree with livefast. Redirection to a safer choice/activity. If he does something you don’t want him to, ask them to stop and suggest another activity. If he does it again, simply say “uh oh” and put him in his room or crib for one minute and then let him out, give in a hug and move on with your day. That is a much more appropriate and effective consequence than “popping” him and he will still see you as his safe person who would never harm him.

Spanks or 'pops' don't work. It just makes your kid afraid to do what they're doing. It doesnt teach them why or show them an alternative to what they're doing. It's like using a shock collar on a dog instead of just training it. You should look up positive reinforcement and peaceful parenting. With my first I thought spanks were the way to teach. Be would throw huge fits and act like a crazy. Someone mentioned to me that I should try other forms of discipline and it was like magic how much he turned around when I did. Also, at that age your kid is not going to remember, process, and listen very well no matter what. It's just the age. Months ago he couldn't figure out how to crawl or say mama. They need time and patience and love.

My son is the same way. I smack his hands and say no and if he keeps it up I smack his butt tell him no and move him away. Also we put him in his crib for time out. If he hasn't learned to crawl out of the play pen put him in there everytime he keeps going back. That's what broke my son of doing a lot of things. He knows how to climb out of it now so we use his crib. He's afraid to climb out of that because when he did he fell down and hasn't done it since.
