An extra hole?
My SIL had my nephew on March 1. She had third degree tearing and an awful child-birthing experience. She went in for her postpartum checkup and they said she hasn't healed properly and has a third hole, in between the two holes that should be there. They said to give it another 6 weeks and if it hasn't healed, they recommended corrective surgery. She told me she won't do it because she can't stand the thought of going through the recovery process again (her recovery was VERY hard). I explained that the recovery from the surgery would likely be minor in comparison to the recovery of having a baby, but she is still very concerned.

Wow poor lady. 3rd degree tears are awful! I'm a nurse and I would advice she had the surgery. If not corrected she can have problems 10-15 years down the like with things like incontinence ect. She will likely heal quicker after the surgery rather than just leaving things the way they are! I wish her all the best can't be a easy experience!

Can they safely put off the surgery for 4 months? The difference in my physical and mental state of mind between week 6 and month 6 were vast. Maybe she would be more willing to consider it then?

I work in OB and also recommend she get the surgery. The recovery will be much easier and faster since she won't have had the great trauma of childbirth at the same time. I had a badly healed 2nd degree episiotomy that also tore open 6 days pp and had to be re-sewn. I then had to do 3-4 months of physical therapy due to scar tissue and a muscle spasm.

If she does not heal on her own and refuses the surgery she puts her self at greater risk for bladder and uterine prolapse at an earlier age. Not fun at any age. Could also cause incontinence issues very early as well and increased risk of infection.

Thank you, ladies. I'll be sure to let her know all of these things. I only told her I would think it would affect her sex life and make things very painful. She said she didn't mind, she'd gladly never have sex again! ?

I genuinely don't think it's an option to leave it. I had a 4th degree year. In the hospital after stitching it all up my dr had a serious conversation with me about the event of it not healing properly and forming a fistula between the vagina and anus. It needs to be repaired.

Yes I have a friend this happened to. She did not get it fixed immediately and poop started coming through. It ruined her self esteem which then ruined her sexual relationship. She finally got it repaired but she still gets frequent UTIs now.

I had an almost fourth degree tear and a HORRIBLE recovery. When I have a bm it opens back up every time and hurts like a mofo! I wish I would've realized at my 6w pp check up ? I dread going to the bathroom now. It's a horrible experience, I think she should do the surgery. Even if it's just precautionary, it'll be better than leaving it with another hole that shouldn't really be there.
Also, I still have bacterial vaginosis from it 9 months later. I ended up in the hospital is a serious infection and very high fevers. I was in soo much pain. Medication hasn't helped either.
