MIL STILL here...

Update on my MIL - she's still here, along with my 39 year old BIL and 91 year old grandma-in-law. They've been here since the beginning of March due to a house fire. They are FINALLY planning to move out next week but just getting that to happen has been like pulling teeth! She WANTS to stay here, she doesn't want to leave and doesn't understand why they can stay until the house is done being rebuilt (ETA October)! I just don't understand why anyone would want to put someone out like that. I have 3 kids and 8 people in one house is just too much!

She has been buying us groceries, but I need to figure out a number to pay us for the extra utilities. I also want her to hire a maid to clean the house top to bottom after they leave.

She told them she would be "renting from us" until she found an apartment to rent. She offered to pay us initially but my husband told her no because he knew that would open the door up to her wanting to stay longer (this was when we thought she would only be here a few weeks). If she paid us "rent", she would feel justified staying here as long as possible.

She was collecting the insurance money this whole time?!?! I would demand she pay you for sheltering and feeding her family. She took advantage, plain and simple. She caused a hardship for your family, even if it was unintentional. I'd be pretty ticked in your situation. Also, isn't it fraud to lie to an insurance company to get money for something that didn't actually happen? She told them she needed it for a rental, but she never moved into a rental. That's lying. Does anybody know anything about insurance fraud?

If it makes you feel better.... one year my parents let my grandma, grandpa, great uncle, Aunt, Uncle, 3 cousins & cousins child live with us. 9 extra people... 1 year... that is including those of us already living there. .. mom, dad, 2 sisters, 3 brothers and I.... 17 people total. We are rich right?... no. It was a 4 bedroom house LOL! Really! My parents had a room... my Aunt and uncle had a room. ... grandparents had a room. .. us girls (me, 2 sisters, cousin & cousins 4yr old shared a room). The downstairs family room. .. parents built a wall so my great uncle had privacy... the remaining family room had 2 bunk beds and an additional bed (3 brothers & 2 cousins).

I was 15 and begged my parents to let me move away.

Not trying to downplay your situation lol. I just know how you feel. I use to love baking.... until I would bake something & it would be gone within minutes lol

I would be ripping my hair out. I LOVE my privacy and I couldn't imagine having to share it like your situation and for that long. I may sound greedy, but I don't care. I wouldn't mind helping out for a little while but 2 months or so. ?... Especially with your own kids and having to feed the other people as well. That's money you're never going to get back for your family. I have also read your other posts, another reason why I am cold about the situation.

I thought we were on the same page at first, but I guess not.

It's been hard and I find myself just staying in my bedroom most of the time. They don't clean up after themselves and it's hard enough cleaning up after 3 kids, much less 3 more adults. I cook for all of them every night too. Because I can't stand a messy house but don't have the energy to keep up with everyone, I just don't like to come out of my room.

I try not to complain because my husband says he feels like he's caught in the middle. He doesn't want to make them leave but he said he feels he has to because of me. That annoys me because we agreed to let them come here until insurance placed them in a rental. I found about about 4-5 weeks into them being here that she was collecting money from insurance and she told the insurance company she would find her own rental. Only, she wasn't looking! She said she figured we would all just settle in to a routine and we'd let them stay. ?

I remember you and your story! I can't believe they are still living with you!

What kind of Grandma uses the kids as a bargaining chip to try and mooch off you even longer?

To be honest I'd have reservations about someone so spiteful watching my kids at all!!
My MIL lives in the downstairs suite of our house and I can hardly bare it!! You ARE a saint!
HeIl I'd probably set fire to my own house if I was in your position.

God that must be so aggravating. At least their moving out. I think living with others after a week or 2 only brings resentment and problems.
