Moving with school-aged kids.
Moving with school-aged kids.
We're planning to move in June, after my 8 year old DS finishes out the school year. We have 3 kids now and I really want to stay home with them. In order to do so, we need to move a little further out into a more affordable home so we can live comfortably on one income. I know this is what's best for my family but I'm feeling really guilty. DS has so many friends on our street and we really do have the best neighbors, it's just too expensive to live here unless I continue to work.

I moved around a lot as a child, but usually across the country not across town. Kids are resilient and will make new friends. My one piece of advice would be to do what you can to help your children maintain their friendships.

I went to a total of 7 schools during my school days. We moved a lot! My dad was a big wig in the automotive industry and we went where ever his job took us. When I was doing it, it didn't bother me too much, but now I look back and feel that I somewhat missed out. I never got to grow up with the same friends all my life. I feel like that I had no real home either. People ask me where I am from, and I don't really have an answer. However, I feel like your child will be fine. It might take some time to adjust. You still are close enough for him to go and see his friends. He will be fine, you have to do what you have to for your family

I moved a lot as a kid, almost every year, but I never really had any neighborhood friends because of that. The one thing that was awesome was my mom ALWAYS made sure I stayed at the same school so I always had that stability

We are a military family and have moved between countries and states.
Kids are resilient but lose that as they get older.
It's easier to move now with technology being available. It's just a pain in the neck really.
My dd always takes a long while to make close friends. She always keeps in touch with the old ones.
Good luck!

I never stayed in one spot growing up, I don't remember middle school moving as bad but I went to 4 different high schools it was the most horrible experience of my life I ended up quitting and getting my diploma elsewhere now I suffer from extreme social anxiety, I wish my mother would have kept me in the same spot throughout high school and I can only imagine how kids are these days.

I think you and the lo will be fine... adjustments of course but feels right when everything gets into place. Stay focused on big picture and the kiddos will follow suit. I moved with my boys when DS1 was around 12 and DS2 was 3... more adjusting for the older one... friends, school etc but everyone was so accommodating at the new school and he was able to see what my goal and intention was... just keep them informed age appropriately and determine now what kind of ties and connections you plan to commit to.. like monthly visit to see old friends..phone contact or social media only etc so they can be practical and still optamostic... best wishes op. It's hard to make this kind of sdecision... i think they will understand..if not now.. later

I think it can be a huge adjustment for kids. We moved last year and my 7 year old didn't handle it well. He was constantly in a bad mood and lashing out. Throwing major fits where he would just scream at the top of his lungs for up to and hour. He missed our old house and his friends etc. we hadn't sold our house so we ended up moving back after 6 months and he is now back to his normal self. Moving is always hard but if it's what's best for your family then it needs to be done. Just make sure you talk about it a lot and ask how they are feeling.

I grew up with my dad in the military, we moved every 3 to 4 years, my entire life until I married. It is an adjustment but kids are resilient and they will make new friends and be fine

Thank you, ladies! I really appreciate the feedback.
My husband grew up in a military family and moved constantly until he was 12. He doesn't really want to move either because he loves our neighbors and that DS has friends here but he knows it's what's best for us too.
