NIPT results

I’m 38 years old and will still be 38 when I deliver . Because of anxiety , I opted out of the genetic testing and I also did with my 2 year old . My nt was normal at 13 weeks 6 days and a nasal bone was detected so the dr did say I can breathe pretty easily based off of that . Well , I had an early anatomy scan at 16.6 and they told me the baby has one or two small holes in her heart calls vsd’s and also two cysts on the brain , both of which are soft markets for downs and other chromosomal abnormalities . Well , the cysts on the brain I’m confused about because when the dr came in to look she said “well , that’s questionable . Idk .” She didn’t seem to think they were actually there and only put the vsd in my paperwork . She said the type of vsd is very common and more babies with than than not do not have chromosome abnormalities . She said they fully expect them to close up before birth and if not shortly after and to never affect her life but because of this , they can’t lower my risk with my age . So I opted for the blood test and now I’m just going out of my mind with worry . She didn’t have any other markers . Has anyone been through something similar? I avoided the test because of anxiety but here I am .

Btw I hope my insurance covers this test . I heard they usually do if you’re “advanced maternal age”. (Hate that term lol )

That was my original plan , meg , to live in bliss . But with the vsd I just needed to know . I would definitely still love her just the same but I cant get that far with uncertainty without knowing at that point . So glad I took the test now !

We choose to only do the free testing as the NIPT was $800 and it wasn’t going to affect whether we continued the pregnancy (we talked about when making the decision, never my hubby or I felt we would abort regardless) so decided to live in bliss until the 20 weeks scan (I get it in a few weeks at 21.5 weeks)!

@Gwenny, thank you! I’m so happy that your results came back all clear. I just received my results today and we are also “all clear” and low risk and found out gender, which is a girl! I do have another blood work in January to check for SpinalB and echo is also scheduled in March. What always gets me worried are when the doctors tell you all the risk factors and testing they want to do because of diabetes, age, etc. I feel like it’s added on stress that I know shouldn’t matter because we will love our babies no matter what. But as each results come in, I’m so thankful and can’t help but heave a sigh of relief.

Please try not to think worst case, easy for me to say I know.

We lost a baby at 22 weeks due to 4 major heart defects, not life compatible. I was 36. 37 had dd who has two vsd holes which will be scanned again later this year when she is 2 1/2 to make sure have healed on their own. Ds born 2 weeks before I turned 39 with one VSD and an aortic arch. We declined genetic testing until he was born, done with chord blood. They all came back negative. He had a scan at 6 weeks and will have another scan at 6 Months. They will monitor the vsd and heart defect, but they’re natural variants. The only thing we’ve had to be careful with his chest infections as he will be more prone to them. Otherwise he’s a happy healthy baby with a massive appetite and growing on the 93rd centile (slightly smaller than his siblings)

Apparently as scans get more detailed they’re picking up more vsd cases, but the numbers of them aren’t increasing 1 in 10 or us have them with no issues and never know

Good luck and cherish every moment of your pregnancy as wont be long until they’re in your arms and whatever the diagnosis will be keeping you busy with smiles, giggles and sleepless nights

Ldr137, thank you for sharing your story . I’m so glad your babies heart is ok . I’m diabetic as well but my dr didn’t think that was a factor since my a1c was so good but I have my doubts . I am hoping my daughters holes close up as well . They said they fully expect them to . I do have a feral echo scheduled in February . My NIPT test just came back normal so I’m breathing a huge sigh of relief there . Good luck on your results .

My last pregnancy, my daughter had slight holes in her heart that was detected when I was 26 weeks (did an echo u/s), they monitored it and we never did any other testing because the doctor said that chances are it would closed, Being diabetic, that was some of the risks known . At 36 weeks it was still showing “cottage like cheese” holes between valves. When I gave birth at 37 weeks, we had the NICU in L&D and immediately checked her heart, which they said sounded normal, did an echo at a few hours old and thankfully they closed up. She is now a rambunctious 4-year old. Good luck mama and see if your doctor is able to do an echo ultrasound if not given yet.

This pregnancy I am older so I did the NIPT and waiting for results. I already have a scheduled echo u/s at 26 weeks because of my last pregnancy.

Knowing definitely doesn’t make me love her any less. It’s the chance of false positives In scared of complicating things and just the anxiety in general . If she does have it , I will worry . Of course . I have horrible anxiety . Thank you for your replies .

I'm 37 and am now 21 weeks with my second boy. We opted for the NIPT because during the 12 week scan and tests we tested really high risk for downs, the odds were 1:19. We waited anxiously for the NIPT results and thankfully everything came back normal and the baby is healthy. We did the test just to know for sure and so we could prepare for either outcome. Even the baby did have downs it wouldn't have changed how we feel about him, we just needed to know. If your baby's results come back normal you can relax for the rest of your pregnancy, if it does have an issue you can be better prepared for when he arrives, either way the results will benefit you in my opinion. Good luck with everything xx

You're not backed into anything. Dont want it? Change your mind & dont do it. Whats it matter if she has it or not? Knowing doesnt make you love her more or less.

She also said if anything , babies with chromosomal abnormalities generally are small and my baby is measuring normal range but slightly big . She said 399 babies out of 400 that have this won’t have problems but it is common with Down syndrome . I’m just upset that I got backed into that test somehow and scared of the false positives you hear about .
