baby not satisfied with breastmilk
baby not satisfied with breastmilk
My baby just hit 6mo. Just finished her growth spurt and my supply is perfect. I even have a slight over supply. However the past week or so she is not satisfied with her night feedings before bedtime. She's acting as if she's not getting enough or as though she needs something heavier to hold her over. But I'm positive I'm making enough milk. She gets solids about 1-2 hours before bedtime. I don't know what to do. If it makes a difference she weighs 14 pounds and always screaming for me to share whatever I'm eating.

There's sleep regression at6 months

Formula keeps them 'fuller' because it's hard for them to digest, so please don't supplement. Grains are hard for baby's tummy to digest. I'd start with real food and see how it goes from there. She's probably waking up to comfort nurse, then go back to bed. My 11 month old still wakes up twice a night to comfort nurse. He's not hungry at all, just wants to nurse back to sleep.

With what runs said my pedi said that could be the cause of sleep regression. Their brains are processing the new things they learned, keeping them up. ??♀️ I brought it up to my pedi and that's what's she said DD was going through was sleep regression ??. It in a FTM so I hardly know anything at all!!

She had a small taste of it about 2 weeks ago and liked it. I can try that again.

Has she tried avocado yet? That would definitely help fill her up if she'll go for it.

I tried giving baby oatmeal once and she seems to get a super terrible tummy ache from it and was vomiting... So i don't think she tolerates oatmeal yet ?

You can also try a bit of baby it meal before bed. That's down thing that has a bit more fiber and can be more filling. I don't know if it's a comfort thing if topping off with formula made a big difference. Mix the oatmeal with breast milk for a bit more heft to it too.

@run that makes a lot of sense. Dd does a lot of comfort nursing and just generally likes being near my breasts during the day. She is very close to crawling and sitting up(closer to crawling than sitting) so maybe that's taking a toll emotionally.

You have to remember that nursing is about so much more than just nutrition. The night nursing likely has nothing to do with hunger but more to do with the comfort, security, and calming aspects of nursing.
There's a lot of developmental leaps going on during that time too so it can be harder for the brain to really settle & baby get into deeper cycles of sleep.
I would also check the wonder weeks chart, go by your edd when checking it. They always matched DD spot on.

She gets sweet potato before her bath and then it's bedtime. Is there a sleep regression at 6mo?

At 6 months you can try starting some solids?
deleted-user·
My DD did this around 6/7 months she went through sleep regression and I though it was my supply, I'd feed her rice cereal before bed and then nurse her and about an hour after she's be up screaming and crying, I'd nurse her again and it wasn't even 20 minutes before she was up. It lasted maybe 2 weeks. She's 9months now and I have no problems, other than she could care less for solids....

I tested last night with 2oz of formula after her nursing session and she had no issue. That's why i thought maybe my milk wasn't enough.
But i don't really wanna have to supplement.

She'll nurse until she unlatches. I offer until she rejects. Then I'll rock her to sleep and put her in her crib.(i take her into bed with me once i go to bed) and about an hour later she's rolling around fussing. I'll feed her again. And 45 minutes later she's fussing. And the cycle continues with shorter bits of time in between until she's just awake. Then i have to start all over.

What is lo doing that makes you think she's unsatisfied?
deleted-user·
It can but its probably more likely that lo needs a bit more calories. With a bit of extra nursing you milk adjusts in amount and in density.

Can diet change your milk 'quality'?
deleted-user·
It can get to be not satisfying enough. It can also not be fatty enough despite the amount. It's not a common thing though. But around that age there can be a marked uptick in nutritional needs and you milk can adjust.
