Breastfeeding.
I am a HUGE breastfeeding advocate. No, I will NOT shame you if you decide to formula feed, and will not tolerate anyone else doing so on my post. Everyone has their own reasons on why they feed their child the way they see fit.
Mitmit that's actually not true about the freezer. What happens is if you're putting it in a regular freezer that's open often the temp fluctuates from being open and closed which can cause bacteria to grow so it's only good for 6m but if you get a deep freezer it's good for a year.
Also lanolin isn't suggested anymore because it traps moisture which will cause nipples to crack more and may cause thrush.
Lastly alot of women think they don't produce enough when in reality it's only 2% that cant. Women mistake their supply regulating for not producing enough. It's normal after 6-8 week for your supply to regulate and clusterfeeding (which women confuse for not producing enough) is normal for the first 10-12weeks. The only reliable way of measuring if baby is getting enough is the diaper output. Pumping also is not a good measure of supply and unless you're going back to work you shouldn't be pumping till 6w pp.
Moonlight, you can ask your doctor for prescription nipple cream. I had severe mastitis the week after my daughter was born which ended with me back in the hospital for five days! Cracked nipples are no joke!! I got prescription nipple cream that was amazing! Just talk to your doctor.
I do have a question. With my daughter I breast fed her for about a week, my breast were so engorged she couldn't latch and I ended up pumping which led to bottle feeding. I decided then to exclusively pump which was horrible! I did until about 2 months and stopped because my nipples were bleeding and pieces were falling off....it was horrible. Had I just tried to stick to nursing it probably would have been better. All of the nipple creams I tried didn't help. I felt so guilty after everytime she drank formula....
I'm so determined to nurse until I have to return to work which I then only plan to pump enough for the 2 days I work for my husband to feed the baby.
My questions are what kind of nipple cream helped you all the best with bleeding, cracks, pain?
I also used to get this horrible pain at let down that felt deep in my chest like someone was tearing the muscle off my chest wall, is that normal to feel? Lol
Any other advice is welcome.
I am still breastfeeding my almost 9 month old, but since I got pregnant with this one my supply must have dropped as he was flailing around like a beached whale while nursing... so as sad and inadequate as it makes me feel, we are supplementing with a high quality organic formula. He is still nursing but when he starts flailing around he gets the bottle... and he loves it so that tells me he needs it.
I did read that if you freeze breast milk it loses its goodness so is only good when given. From the fridge. So if that's the case how long does it last? Also can anyone recommend a good breast pump? Last time round I had a manual one which worked pretty well but want to invest in the most effective this time round as I do want a bit of a life and to also share the feeding with my partner.
Also what bottles would you recommend ? I chose NUK last time as they had a latex teat but getting my baby to take it was a nightmare and he just wanted boob! Fair enough really but this time it would be nice to do a mixture when needed.
The other thing is when's too early to introduce the complimentary bottle feed when you need to? I've also heard if you start too early you can confuse the baby and they end up choosing the bottle above the boob!
I couldnt nurse my baby as my boobs are 38 H and he was only 5 lbs and 1 oz so when i tried i was latterly suffocating him, even with my husbands help. So i pump for a month, it was so hard as i had a csection and no one could help me. So i was only able to do a month? hopefully this time around i can pump for a longer time!
I'm also hoping to breastfeed! I was successful with my daughter until I went back to work and started having supply issues. She weaned herself at 7 months anyway. I was so sad! I'm having twins this time and hoping and praying I can exclusively breastfeed/pump for both of them. Thanks for starting this thread! ❤️
I nursed my daughter for 3 months. Unfortunately, I had to stop so early and it was hard to keep up with because I became a single mom and had to quickly move home and find a new job at this time. I was disappointed that I stopped so soon especially since it was so hard to get her to latch properly in the beginning. My son I nursed for 15 months. My dad died in January and I spent a lot of time taking care of all his things so again it was hard to keep up with. With this baby I plan to breastfeed again. :)
I nursed both my girls until a little after a year! With my first daughter, she had an upper lip tie which lead to a bad latch! We worked very hard with a Lactation consultant and got her latch sorted out. A couple weeks later she got thrush, which she passed off to me. If any of you have had that, you know how painful it is to have nipples that feel like they are on fire! All of this is to say, I somehow kept pushing because I was seriously driven to breastfeed and was successful on nursing my daughter until after her first birthday.
My second daughter had the perfect latch right off the bat and was the easiest baby to nurse.
I look forward to nursing this third baby. I have enjoyed nursing and would recommend it to anyone who is a first time mom! Stick with it because it is so so rewarding!
I plan on it! My first had a latch problem and with us living with my in laws. My mil heavily influenced me to give up. I now know that she does not like bf'd and has even made a comment to the extent it is nasty. ? I breastfeed my 2nd till 2 months. Which stopped and switched him to formula for what I thought was honestly my husband feeling left out. I soon discovered it was once again my mil manipulating him once again but it was already to late and milk was gone. My husband has since then realized just how much my in laws have done and they had a falling out. Thank goodness he no longer takes crap from them and I am much older and less gullible.(We got married when I was 18) That being said I will breastfeed this baby and I will feed till after 12 months and then pump for sippy cups when needed.
That's awesome, Britt! Every drop counts!(:
Mitmit- You can most certainly have a drink if you're breastfeeding! The only need to pump and dump is if you're too drunk to drive. If you're over the legal limit to drive and aren't able to care for baby, then you should dump that next pump session. Otherwise, it is safe to drink and nurse.(:
Good for you, Lou! Way to go, mama!(:
Yes I'll most definitely be breastfeeding. I did with my son up to 7 months until one boob totally gave up the ghost.. it still looks a bit smaller even this time round.
My only concern is being able to have a drink of alcohol during this period. Serious question, did anyone drink alcohol and still breast feed?
Jd83- You can breastfeed while at home and pump at work if you'd like! You need to pump in accordance to when baby normally eats. If baby eats every 2-3 hours, be sure to do the same with pumping. I'm so happy that your job will give you a safe and sanitary place to pump! If for some reason in the future you need a copy of workplace pumping laws, please let me know!(:
Monique- And that's perfect, too! A full belly is what is best for baby. My best friend went through the same thing when she decided to exclusively pump because her baby girl wouldn't latch. Your feelings are valid, and breastfeeding truly isn't for everyone! ??
LAK- You can absolutely exclusively pump!! In fact, one of my best friends was an exclusive pumper because her baby wouldn't latch. You can most definitely breastfeed both if you would like to, as well. But that's completely up to you once the babies get here. It's a lot of work, so it may alleviate some stress on you if you nurse and pump. Just ensure that you get plenty of skin to skin time with the babies to help your supply. And your body will do the rest! If you decide to be an exclusive pumper, you can also put the babies to the breast for antibodies purposes. But it's not necessary. Just kissing and loving on your sweet babies will trigger your body to make everything that they need through your breast milk. If you have anymore questions or need support, we're here for you!(:
Mamapatuca- It's seriously so rough in the beginning and sore nipples/bloody milk are definitely a thing. I too have inverted nipples, and my daughter was also tongue and lip tied. So it was a hell of a ride in the beginning. Just don't give up if jt's something that you're truly determined to do. Every baby and every breastfeeding journey is different, so you may not even have any issues this time around!
I can't breastfeed due to working full time but I would love to pump so the baby still gets nutrients. How often do you have to pump? This is my first so I'm not sure if pumping would be doable either with working full time. My company is awesome and would give me the time/privacy to pump when needed.
@LAK just some advice. Keep an open mind about breastfeeding first. If you feel apprehensive about it the babies will feel it too, when they try to nurse. You might absolutely love it. I'll be honest it is extremely hard at first but once you all get used to it, it's the most amazing thing!!! I nursed my son until he was 21 months old. We STRUGGLED at first. He lost a full pound while we were in the hospital but we persevered and it ended up being an amazing thing!
I'm a huge advocate as well I have literally been pregnant and or breastfeeding since 10.2012 and this is #7 but # 3 in that time frame. I exclusively breastfeed and I am still nursing my youngest that turned 2 at the end of January he has self weaned to only nursing now bf bed. Congrats to everyone and love seeing all the support. I as well am a great resource to anyone with questions.
My son wouldn't latch. I didn't give up, and pumped for him for 12 months. It was hard and I hated being attached to the pump, but I did what I had to do. There were times I didn't have enough milk, and supplemented with formula, but I refused to let myself feel bad about it. Fed is best.
I have no intention of attempting latch with this next kiddo. I honestly believe it was the root of my baby blues and post partum. I felt so inadequate until I came to terms with pumping. I'll go straight to pumping this time to avoid the negativity.
I am a first time mom expecting twins. Is it possible to exclusively pump? I want them to get the benefits of breast milk but I think between me being a first timer, them probably being premature and the fact that there is 2 of them I don't know that breastfeeding is going to work out. I'm getting mixed reviews from friends about exclusively pumping.
I tried sooo so hard to exclusively breastfeed my daughter and couldnt success :( i ended up formula feed and breastfeeding but only at night, at some point after she was born i had to stop because my milk was bright red from all the bloody nipples ? and when i stopped she didnt like it for a whole month i was feeling like a FAILURE!! and until this day it hurts me sooo much that i couldnt do what i always dreamed of (i dont remember whats the word for that but my nipples are not normal they are reverse? Or something like that) im already telling my husband this time around DO NOT LET ME GIVE UP AND DONT LET ME BUY BOTTLE, but he says: if i see you in sooo much pain like last time OF CURSE i will make u stop because i dont wanna see u suffer like that again"
So please please pleaseeee give me some tips on how can i be succesful this time around. Its gonna be much appreciate it.
Love4paws- Good for you, momma!! If you have any questions or need any advice at all I'm sure we'd all be happy to help! It's definitely overwhelming in the beginning, but so totally worth it.((:
Neo and Kristi- Congratulations! It's such a gift being able to nurse! Every single drop is worth it.(:
Lokker- It's totally fine as long as you up your calorie intake and make sure you're taking all of your necessary vitamins.(:
Awe! That's awesome, momma! Congrats! My daughter still nurses first thing in the morning, at nap times, and at bed time. She is a milkie addict. I'm excited to try and tandem nurse! I'm sure she'll want milkies even more once she sees her baby sister nursing frequently.(:
Yesterday I went out with my boyfriend went to watch a movie, me and him don't live together yet. but point is yesterday when he was dropping me off his like sleep over at my house witch the mom and dad lives. I said no,
his response was why is everyone deciding or making choices for you and their going to do the same with the baby, when I know that's not true. what he thinks is that my mom tells me not to sleep over. So he left all mad. and I felt in my heart that he went on and cheated on me...
TWW!!
2dpo and on the tww journey. Anyone on the same dpo or close? Haven't decided if I will test at 12dpo or just wait and see if she shows up!!
I nursed all 3 girls and plan to with #4.
