is smoked fish safe to eat?

I am trying to avoid anything that may not be safe while pregnant. Although I have read that it is good to eat fish while pregnant. However, I am getting curious as to what fish are to be eaten or not, especially that I read about fishes with mercury not being safe to be eaten while pregnant. And I'm not really familiar with what types of fishes are those. Now, we usually have smoked fish that can be easily bought in the market here in our place. However, I have read on some articles that it is not ideal to eat smoked fish while pregnant. Should that be true? For anyone who did eat this while pregnant, were there any side effects or something when you did? I like smoked fish specially that it is too tasty. But, of course, I need to think of my baby's welfare when it comes to the foods I take.

Basically the only time I say I can't eat something like that is because I don't want to and I'm using pregnancy/listeria as an excuse.

@annakinbananakin You are soooooo right! Listeria is extremely rare. You have almost the same chance of winning 1million+ dollars in the lottery than getting listeria. And that's not just pregnant women. That's everyone in the US. Listeria can kill people, not just pregnant women. Occurrence is about 250/325 million in the US population, which is comparable to million dollar lottery winners.

The types of fish that are not safe are the ones high in mercury you should be able to Google which fish that is. I know it's sword fish but can't remember what else. Salmon and tuna are safe to eat but in small amounts

I was worried about everything when I was pregnant. I took a "healthy pregnancy" class and the instructor basically told us everything "they" tell us to worry about is so highly unlikely it's not even worth the stress. Even sandwich meat. What people are afraid of is listeria because it can affect your baby but it would also affect you of course. Same with sushi. When was the last time you heard of contaminated sushi or smoked fish. In Canada sushi is all frozen before we get it which kills everything. Said my instructor anyway! So don't believe everything you read but he vigilant obviously. Just throwing that out there, no judgement either way. As for mercury, I don't know, I'm also paranoid about it. Everything in moderation right? ?
