A rocker or swing

Baby panadol

I went through 1.5 boxes of new born nappies

A play mat for tummy time

I really want a mobile for the change table

Dummy

A calming cd - classical music, sounds from the womb, nursery rhymes

Wraps, wraps,wrap- bigger the better- jersey material is good as is flannelette. Esp. For winter

I couldn't live with out my love to dream swaddle! Wrapping is great, but my little man could get out of anything. Even the midwives were like how did he get out. So love to swaddle kept him warm with out me worrying he'd kick all his rugs and wraps off.

I know someone has said nipple shields.. But nipple CREAM is a most. If your breastfeeding start putting it on from day one even if they don't hurt.. You'll thank me later...;)

I got mine from target, that was 3.5 years ago, I had a look a couple of weeks ago for a couple more and they had the spot for them but they were sold out,( the toy sale was on ) so I'm guessing they still sell them, they are the best! :-)

Oh yes! Fancy outfits! I didn't even use anything other than onesies until bubs was 3 months old!

And those zip up swaddles have been my best friend. Bubs looks so funny in them but she loves them! She feels secure. The best present I received!

Some thing I have found useful that haven't been mentioned:

? wipes warmer

? play mat

? love to dream swaddle

? old style cloth nappies - I put them on top of the change table in case there are accidents when changing. That way the change mat cover doesn't need to be washed as frequently.

? baby oil - I use Burt's bees baby oil after each bath

? saline baby nasal spray

? lots of cotton balls - I find they are more effective for cleaning dd's bum (with water) after a poo explosion than wipes

? black and white toys and toys with bright prints - Lamaze toys are very good for young babies

? bamboo bath towels

? little cotton rugs that you can layer on bub in pram. I bought a few from mothercare and they have been great because they can go in the dryer.

? hand sanitizer for when you can't get to the sink to wash your hands - next to change table, anywhere you feed bub and in nappy bag

Things I haven't used:

? newborn attachment for high chair

? fancy outfits for baby under 3mths. My bub is 11wks and still lives in wonder suits.

? dummies - bub didn't want one

? don't buy too many of one type of bottle. I am bf and bought medela for expressed bottles but bub hates them

? breast pads - boobs never leaked

I wish I had of bought some nipple shields. My boobs got shredded and if I had of had those on hand early on it would have saved dh a late night trip to a chemist. All of my bf friends used them too

One thing I would highly recommend, is quilted mattress protectors , being summer , when I had my DS in dec 08 it was so hot I first had terry waterproof ones , but that's pretty much just like sleeping on plastic, the terry is so thin, he would wake up soaked in sweat, so I put a blanket over the mattress protector until we could get quilted ones.

You can get them from big w, they're am-ah-ZING! Theyre like a gel pad you can heat or put in the freezer to put on your poor sore boobies!

In our case a baby carrier was a waste of money. We used it once & that was it.. But other than that we found all the other stuff listed useful :) other than change table, I never use it lol but I probably wouldnt go buying too many bottles or dummy's incase bub doesn't like the ones you get (my eldest was a fussy bum)

A baby thermometer if they get sick and children's panadol

And definitely at least 2 mattress protects for cot and bassinet. Nothing worse than having a wet mattress if baby throws up or leaks through nappy.

As EmandAsh said a chair is a good idea, I've got a glider chair on order which will be great for breastfeeding in the nursery, in particular at night

Sounds like you've got heaps already. :-)

Maybe not "essentials" but I also bought; change table, bouncer, baby monitor, sterilizer (you can use Milton but you'll definitely need some form of sterilizer/sterilizing), breast pads, maternity tops/bras, burp cloths, face washers, bottle cleaner, high chair (for a few months down the track so not necessary straight away), oooh I spent endless hours in our rocking chair, night light or lamp, room thermometer (I bought gro egg brand and absolutely love it), bath temp thermometer (I found this essential in the early days personally)....

Um I guess that's it? Like I said not all "essentials" but nothing I regretted getting or didn't use.

Moniter

Bottles

Burp cloths

Possibly dummies

Assortment of creams for agitated nips/bums

Thermometer

There's more, but brain is mush at the moment.

I'm a ftm also but I think a must is a baby carrier

I'm also using modern cloth nappies as they are much cheaper than disposables
