working out and heart raye under 140?

Ladies, I am 5w4d today. I am usually a very inactive person. I sometimes work out once a week but that is about it. I usually do this memorial day 10k and I want to do it this time too. I asked my doctor and they said I could still do it so long as my heart rate does not go above 140. I tried a walk-jog routine and my heart rate keeps going above 140. Which means i have to walk the 10k and no running. Any advice ladies?

I read somewhere that keeping your heart rate under 140 isn't as important as how you feel, like pp said. Instead keep your exertion level in the 5-7 range on a scale of 1-10. At a 7 you should be able to talk while exercising without gasping for breath but not with complete ease either. Does that make sense?

There was an article posted in the Facebook group that said doctors are now saying that number is old news. Research has proven it's not something you need to follow. How you FEEL is a better indicator. If you need to stop: stop. If you need to slow down, slow down. Stay hydrated and listen to your body
