How much

How much do you spend on formula weekly, or monthly? I am EBF currently and I’m considering switching to formula. She’s 2 weeks old, and not sure how much she’d take out of bottle.

Why don't you do both bfing and formula? There's no reason you have to pick solely one. There's too much pressure to solely EBF and if it's not working for you or you wish you could get a break once in a while, then make it happen! Pumping and bottle feeding or substituting with formula once in a while isn't going to be horrible. It helps if you establish your supply with pumping and feeding until 6 weeks, then you can train your body! I trained mine after 6 weeks (with supplementing and pumping) to where I only bfed at night and pumped once during the day, with formula in-between. Everyone was happier. :) Good luck!

I would also advise pumping if she can't latch. It will save sooo much money if you aren't WIC eligible. It's definitely worth it. If you don't already own a pump, alot of insurance pays for them and if not, within the first month of not having to buy formula, you would have paid for your pump. If your able to produce of course. ?

You could always pump!

But I personally have WIC and I get 11 cans a month that are priced at 18 dollars. I only usually have to buy 1 extra can a month.

My DD only drinks 3-4 oz ever 3-4 hours a day and has 2 MOTN feeds and she is almost 5 months old.

She does have tongue tie, getting a referral to an ENT. I’m hoping that will help. But honestly, with my first, I felt like we were tied to each other. I was a single mom so I was ok with it. This time around, I have a fiancé, and a 6 year old, so it’s hard to be nursing 24/7. I’m pumping as well, so my mom got her to take a bottle today - 1oz then 2oz little bit later.

Have they checked for a lip tie or tongue tie? Anything that could be causing trouble with gaining weight? Do you know how your supply is doing?

I had a bit of a struggle with my second, but after a month of powering through jaundice and lip tie my daughter started gaining weight really well. I did use some formula, but I focused on breastfeeding.

In the end whatever decision you make will be the right one for your family. It usually depends on what formula you get, but I was fortunate I had WIC with my first. She had to have Nutramigen. It’s not cheap.

Good luck, mama!

I agree after 6 weeks breastfeeding is so much easier.

I started with one of the most expensive formulas at $34 a container. I was using one every 8-9 days or so. I was spending about $100-120 a month

Then I switched to generic which $20 for even more. I spend maybe $80 a month and he’s 11 months old now

Agree with PP about breastfeeding!

No judgment here if you do decide to switch, but I just want to encourage you to keep trying for a few more weeks. Breastfeeding is hard at first, but it gets wayyyyy easier once you both get used to it! Finding a lactation group/consultant in your can be a great resource!

The first 6 weeks of breastfeeding are the hardest! I have zero advice about formula costs because I breastfed my daughter until she was two and my son until he was 18 months. But I promise it does get better!!!

Avg with my first I'd spend about $50-$70 (depending on age and then he started baby and solid foods)

I had to use enfamil cuz it was the only one his stomach would agree with. I unfortunately didn't produce enough milk

I started formula feeding at 6 weeks old and it was about $25 (a large canister) each week.

On avg we went through the 1lb tub of formula every week.

Wic is very helpful when it comes to formula.

Firstly. Look into getting on wic. That will help ALOT. theyll give you some every month (youll still have to buy a few cans too) but it really helps out
