need help with 2 year olds bedtime

So as some of u may know my son is a screamer at bed time. Since he was 7 months old he was a great sleeper untill the beginning of the summer when my husband started his second job at night. He has been doing this job for 4 years every summer. So it's nothing new. Here's what we do. My son eats dinner. We get him ready for bed, he has some milk in his chair, brush teeth then put him to bed. We would just lay him in his crib and walk away, sometimes he would scream a little then stop. Now that he is older and knows daddy is not there to help every night, I have been staying in his bedroom till he pretty much falls asleep, which can take a few minutes sometimes. Then I sneak out. Was it bad that I started this? Did it mess up the cycle we had? I thought because he is older and more aware he would want that, as most kids want there parents in there room at night reading them a book or rubbing their back to sleep. Now if my husband puts him to sleep and leaves after a few minutes he will scream for an hour. We go in every few minutes and tell him it's bedtime time for sleep and all that. We are at our wits end. And he still gets up in the middle if the night screaming almost every night. And we can't get him back to sleep in crib so my husband brings him out to living room in his playpen and he goes to sleep there fine with my husband sleeping in the couch. Should we seek some kind of help for him? Right at this very moment he does not even want me to put him to bed, he only wants daddy. He totally freaked out when my husband handed him to me.
