Suicidal brother (trigger)
Suicidal brother (trigger)
Guys my heart is breaking. I've posted before about my dad. Long story short my step mom passed away 10 months ago. My dad got engaged to my little brothers teacher 3 months later. My dad is completely abandoning his kids. My little brother is struggling but his other parent- the one he's supposed to go to for support- is being a douche. Y'all my aunt just called me and confided in me that my brother had been having thoughts of suicide. He wants help but I all alone up in Minnesota at his school. He said he gets in this mood for about 10 mins and that's when he tries. He takes a belt and tightens it as much as he can and panics at the last second. He said he leaves his door unlocked so someone will find him if one these times he doesn't let go. He said he wants to do it so my dad can see the pain he caused because talking to him is impossible. He is going to therapy now. But this last weekend was another try for him. I can't talk to him about this because my aunt told me in confidence. I've tried to reach out to him but he builds a wall. I always let him know I'm here if he needs me. I'm just scared that one of these days he doesn't let the belt go and I get that call. My aunt told me he's getting back on his meds and back to the doctor. I obviously can't tell anyone in my family this I just needed to get this out. My heart is breaking for him. And I am so disappointed in my father.

I'm sorry, but I would call and raise hell with your father. His abandonment and treatment of your brother is literally making your brother attempt suicide! Is your dad even aware? Can he pull his head out of his ass long enough to realize it?! Your poor brother! I'm so sorry y'all are having to go through this!

Does your father know about this? How does he feel? I feel so bad for your brother. :( I used to be suicidal. It's a hard thing to break out of when you're that sad.

I'm so sorry that's happening! My brother and I are very close and if he was suicidal, I would definitely talk to him about it even if my aunt told me in confidence. If he ever succeeded and I knew he was struggling and I never talked to him about it, I don't think I would ever be able to forgive myself. I'm not necessarily saying that's what you should do, I can only speak to what I would do. Hopefully the therapy and getting back on medication helps him! That must be so heartbreaking, I can't even imagine!
Is there a way you can talk to him about how he's been doing without him finding out that your aunt talk to you?

He tried to talk to my dad. All my dad said was "do you need me to pay for therapy?" Then he dropped the subject. All four of his kids are angry with him and he either is in major denial or just doesn't care. My dad is not easy to talk to. I've tried for years. I try to call and text asking how he is and telling him he can call me anytime. He doesn't answer mostly.

Find some way to get help for please.
My stepdads sperm donor did this to his younger brother. Only different both the father and mother were ignoring him. They took out huge life insurance policies on him. When he had had enough he jumped out of his friends truck on the night of his first homecoming dance. He first at 45 mph. His friends said it happened so fast they thought they were imagining it. Well both parents got what they wanted. Please do whatever you can for your brother and tell your dad to start being a dad. What he said was highly uncalled for and can (and may/will) lead to suicide. In sorry you're brother and you are going threw this.

Who cares if your aunt told you in confidence? What happens if he goes through with it, will you feel guilty knowing that you knew about it, but you chose not to say anything just cause he "confided" in your aunt?
Please reach out to him. You dont have to say your aunt told you, just try to talk to him, let him know that you're aware of how your dad is behaving, anything really.

I'm not ignoring it. I have tried to reach out and continue to do so. But he doesn't seem to want to talk to me about it. At least he feels comfortable talking to my aunt. I've made it clear he can always talk to me. My dad is a lost cause. He's so involved with his new piece he doesn't give a s*** . He did it to me and my older brother. And now he's doing it to my younger brothers. I am happy he's seeking help. And like I said I haven't come out and told him what I know but I've made it clear that I understand his feelings towards my dad and he can talk to me anytime.
ETA my dad knows he's struggling with these thoughts. He has made no point to help. My stepmom is no longer around. But the family who does care is there for him and he knows. All I can do is continue to reach out and hope that he does when he's ready.

I'd be worried if she flat out to her brother what she knew then he would lose trust in the aunt and stop confiding in her. Which wouldn't be a good scenario. It sounds like all the right things are being done...Maybe have your aunt take away all ropes / belts / sharp things etc?
How old is your brother? I hope the therapy helps, definitely keep reaching out to him, even if he won't open up I'm sure he likes knowing you care.

My aunt is in Massachusetts. Me, parents and siblings are in Arizona. Brother is 19years old. He's in Minnesota going to college.
Yes pp that's why I didn't want to come out and just say what I knew. But yes I send him pics of the kids regularly. I ask how he is and if everything is ok.

Someone needs to get him immediate, intense care. His therapist needs to be made aware of this and that person should take the appropriate steps to keep him safe. Please do something, whether you were told in confidence or not, because he is obviously hurting and wants to know he is cared for so be that person who goes the extra mile to keep him safe, even if it is keeping him safe from himself.

I would definitely do something different if he wasn't seeing a doctor. Monday is when he sought out a doctor again and from what I hear he wants help and is being honest to the doctor so there's not much else I can do but continue to reach out. I am happy he has my aunt to talk to. I just feel so heartbroken for him because he wants my dad to step up and be a dad when I know he won't.

Well Im glad hes getting help. He can't let his life depend on his dad's actions. Some people are just POS and no matter what we do, they won't be who we want them to be. Tell him to look into radical acceptance. Its best to accept the situation for what it is instead of holding himself back hoping for something else when it sounds like your dad just simply does not have it in him to be who he wants him to be.

I know this is new for him. So my dad divorced my mum when I was a baby. He remarried my stepmom and pushed me and my older bro aside. He had two boys with my stepmom. They obviously got better treatment. I don't hold this against them it's not their fault. Well now that my stepmom passed away (10mos ago) my dad started dating my younger brothers teacher at his college. 3 months after stepmoms death they got engaged. You see I had my mum to help me when my dad was a pos to me. My younger bros don't. My dad is supposed to be there for them. And he's not. He cannot be alone hence why he's jumped the gun on another marriage so soon. No only that this woman moved in and immediately started changing things. Criticizing my little bro. He went to get a piece of jewelry that belonged to his mom for an altar type thing and this lady put like 5 locks on the door. The room that he spent his last moment with his mom in.

Oh and here's the kicker.
My dad converted to Mormon from catholic. He wants this woman to convert. She's catholic and wants him to go back to the Catholic Church. She also wants my dad (60 years old) to get a reverse vasectomy and have a child with her (she's 46 yrs) I'm like wahhh. My dad has made it clear he is done with babies and changing diapers and such. I don't think this will last. She never had kids and I understand her wanting to try but she should have discussed this with my 60 year old dad who has 4 kids already and doesn't want more before they got serious. My parents also lost my brother 4 days after he was born because of GBS. This was in 1989. His birthday was last month and this woman told my dad "I don't see why it still upsets you it was so long ago" I mean the balls on this lady is ridiculous.

Well since she is that way I would be the one to speak up for my brother and tell her if she can get her head out of her ass and step down for a bit so your father can at least try and help your brother in some kind of way and I would also tell your dad to quit being an idiot and at least try and talk to your brother. I'm sorry but I'm the type of person who speaks up and say what I have to and I don't care who's feelings I hurt. My dad is the say way so I understand what your going threw. My father only cares about my two older sisters (we have the same mom) and his two younger boys (I don't consider them my brothers) and because of his other kids mom we don't speak because I spoke my mind one time and she told my dad to never speak to me again unless I apologized. I laughed and said goodbye. I hope everything goes good for your brother and he gets the help he needs?

Your brother needs to be in the hospital. It's the best place for him. He will get counselling sessions everyday. Trust me I know. I used to deal with sever depression and suicidal thoughts. My mom called the cops because I was going to kill myself. They brought me to the psychiatric ward and I was there for a little over a month. It really helped.

My dad won't do anything. I've confronted him countless times. The best thing I can do along with other family is to love him and be there for him. Which we are. He is in college on a football scholarship. My aunt asked him if he wanted to go into a psych ward and he said no. He wants to go back to his doctor and counselor and get back on his meds. He said going off his meds was a horrible thing to do. He thought he felt good enough to be off them. Which he knows he can't do that now.
