My Mom works in post partum as an RN. She loves her job and says it so rewarding. The only thing that is ever hard is patients who are rude or disrespectful, which rarely happens- so I think just the fact that you are aware and want to show appreciation( that be a verbal thank you, or a box of chocolates) I know it makes a huge difference to them knowing you are happy with their care.
I had amazing nurses during my labor. I thanked each one and let them know how much I appreciated all the help. I think if my husband went out for food, it be nice to grab some treat for them but definitely not necessary.
We thought about it but I recently found out with Kaiser in roseville the same doctors I've seen my whole pregnancy for not deliver babies at all! They don't even go to the LD unit. So when I have our daughter everyone is a new face from the doctors to the nurses it will be the first time I've ever seen them before. Disappointing coming from such a large hospital. Love my OB though so maybe after baby is born I'll bring the office a basket of goodies
As a nurse in UK, not a midwife,, we love a box of chocolates to put in the office so we can sneak in and take one every now and then,, never do we expect this though as its a rarity and our patients are with us longer than what we (momas to be) will b in hosp for so its more giving to the ward than the individual nurses. I don't kno if this helped just tried too put it from the other side? And yea @vanessa, u earn loads more than us overthere if we're talking dollars were on bout $30,000-35,000 a year, we work 12.5hr shifs too with 2x 30min unpaid breaks we do 3/4 shifts a week, we get taxed and pay national insurance which takes 20% of our earnings off that ? xx
probably not...they change shifts and you never see the same ones....i do show my gratitude by thanking them when they come in to help
I'm not going to buy them gifts. I hadn't even thought of it and honestly, I'm so nervous that I'll be lucky to remember my own hospital bag. I'm still working full time. I definitely don't have time to make gift bags for nurses. Maybe a thank u card after. Especially if a few nurses are a big part of the birth. I live close to hospital and that's where pediatrician is.
No k comer get a life! Vanessa is spot on! Baking brownies and saying thank you can both mean you're showing appreciation. Now I'm going to sleep and hopping off this post before it gets ugly ✌️
No, I just don't let people make me out to be something I'm not. You people jumped on us like we hate nurses. Tie all the gift bags your heart desires. Just don't judge others for having a different opinion than your own. That's what you need to do.
Gosh Vanessa take a chill pill ?
Nothing fancy- but I may have dh pick up something like bagels or fruit if I think about it during my stay. The nurses at my hospital are amazing! This will be my 3rd birth there.
However, I think the best gift of all is being a polite patient:)
I'm not buying gifts nor even thought about it. If we were there for awhile because of some reason, maybe.
Otherwise, I will leave that to the doctors to show appreciation to their nurses and the hospital for their staff.
I will show them gratitude by thanking them and letting them know they did a great job. Sometimes just a verbal thank you from the heart goes a long way.
Buying my son a small token of thanks at the end of the year to me is a different story.
I was charged $22,000 for my first birth.
I've pre paid for the hospital fees this time, too.
I paid to deliver in a nice hospital with good staff.
I'm not buying gifts too.
And if a nurse treats a patient better because they were given a gift, there is some real ethical wrongness there but that's my opinion.
And that's great that you pay 900 a month for insurance but I'm guessing that's for your entire family. I was telling you what mine alone is. Irrelevant but it matters to me. I love giving gifts but this is one situation where I won't be. I'll thank them and show them respect but I won't be going out of my way. Sorry if that is somehow so offensive to people.
I don't think I ever once said I wouldn't show them appreciation. I'm not sure how me not buying them something came off as not being appreciative. I have manners, especially coming from the south but I'm also a realist. My nurse friends (depending on what they specifically do and where they work) make anywhere from 50,000 to 80,000 a year. It's a huge jump but one of them is an ER nurse and has her masters. I in no way meant I don't appreciate nurses. I'm just as grateful for them without giving them another Chapstick and hand sanitizer. Good grief.
Off subject a little,, Just curious as I've read all ur posts lol how much do nurses make round ur area? As a UK nurse, we're considered terribly under paid and wonder how much it varies country to country? Sorry not trying to stir it just genuinely intrigued - and possibly bitter lol xx
With my previous 2 pregnancies I saw so many nurses that I would need a 2nd income to do that lol. I think I only saw each 1 once. Even during my hospital stays for this pregnancy I saw so many nurses. You could just send a card to the hospital for the nursing staff thanking them. I did that for the NICU nurses with my youngest child
I personally think you get taken care of better if you show just a tiny token of appreciation so I don't mind at all getting something for the nurses & we pay $900 a month for our insurance. But you are right to each his own. Some people don't do it & that's your right. I also bought my OB a small Ty gift & the office staff but I enjoy giving gifts to ppl so this isn't an uncommon thing for me.
And by the way, when you pay over $500 dollars a month for maternity insurance and pay that from also working hard for my money, you can possibly see why I think a thank you should suffice. This country and its tipping has gotten out of control. I don't get tipped for my job and I work hard everyday. This was never a personal attack on nurses but a personal opinion on gifting someone for doing their job.
You said we didn't appreciate nurses because of my comment and if you actually read it you'll see that you in fact either over reacted or misunderstood what I was saying. How you can think I don't appreciate nurses by simply saying I won't be buying them gifts is beyond me. This is so petty. To each his own.
I don't think I overreacted at all. But they take care of multiple babies, including all of ours and their job is difficult. Regardless of how much they make. A little appreciation doesn't hurt.
I made a big basket full of snacks, candy, gun and breakfast stuff for them. I'm also going to make a basket with bottled drinks tomorrow :) love the OB nurses!
Oh I so am! I know I'm going to be very stern with my decisions of how I want to labor and stuff so I want my nurses to really like me and be on my side ? happy nurses happy labor lol I just make a big batch of something and leave it at the nurses station
I was thinking maybe order them a pizza.. But, this is my 3rd pregnancy and I too rarely saw the same nurse twice. Some were great and some were straight b**** es. If I have an awesome nurse I'll def order a pizza for her and her crew.
I'm with you Vanessa! Where I live nurses make a lot of money, heck a lot more than me. A simple thank you from me will have to suffice!
Kirby, no offense but you're jumping off the handle with this one. No one said they didn't appreciate their nurses, I simply stated that it's their job and I have way too much going on to make up cute little gift bags for people are being well paid for what they're doing, especially considering I don't remember seeing the same nurse more than once or twice. If I had the same one or two nurses throughout my stay I would consider a gift but this hasn't been the case for me. Sorry that I don't feel the need to tip everyone for doing their job. This whole idea of gifts for the nurses is a relatively new development as well. Not something they expect, although as I mentioned in a previous post, I'm sure it's appreciated. We all like gifts.
I really should decide now on this because I didn't with my first & regretted it! I thought I'd go back & drop off something but I never did..
My SO works in a factory where they make those peanut butter filled pretzel squares.im taking a few of those since we always get tons!!my friends mom was a nurse (she's retired now) but she used to ask me for those all the time they really enjoyed them in the hospital. I think grabbing bulks of food/snacks like that would b great!:)
I plan on a little basket full of treats and a card to say thank you. And I can't believe a couple of the comments seeming so unappreciative towards those nurses. Yes, it's their job but everyone wants to feel appreciated for what they do. And they do a lot! Multiple women in my family are nurses for all different parts of the hospitals and you wouldn't believe how much it makes their day just by getting a simple "thank you" from someone. Nurses do a lot more than even most doctors do.
I'm having my husband bring in a bunch of pastries for the nurses the morning after my c-section from a really nice bakery in town. My husband won't be staying nights with me while I'm in the hospital because we're new to the area and don't have anyone we trust yet to watch our 3 year old. I figure since I'll have to rely on them constantly thru out the nights that I might as well be known as the patient that brought goodies! Can't hurt.
I got tumbler cups from the dollar store and put candy Chapstick and hand sanitizer in them I made 6 figure if I get a new nurse every shift I'll have one for each last time I ended up with the same day nurse and night nurse my whole stay
I'm just giving a thank you card with a nice message.
Following. I had three awesome nurses and a doctor I wanna do something special for. But i also don't want to exclude the other staff that I may not even know helped me. All I can think of is a goodie basket or like a box of pastries.
Sure didn't, only seen 1 nurse twice. Had multiple nurses for all 3 kids and usually you wont see same one again after their shift is over and plus theure just doing their job and they get plenty of yummy snacks in the break room. Plus when labor happens anything but food, snacks, etc. Is on your mind and i had enough to think about than that.

Oo yeah allergies. I saw on Pintrest a little note that said " thanks for 'changing' lives, have a treat on us!" With some quarters stapled to it. Too cheesy? Lol...
Cake/cupcakes I'll probably have S/O get some cupcakes ... I'll have to ask if there are any nurses with allergies I don't want 1 or 2 to be excluded .
I saw another thread on BB the other day and a nurse suggested food, preferably something store bought. I may ask my hubby to pick up some treats for the nurses.
I totally support nurses and think they're awesome but they are there to do their job. I have enough on my plate, personally, to worry about making gift bags for the nurses. We are the ones who deserve a gift lol. But I'm sure the nurses appreciate the gesture if you plan on doing it.

Maybe I'll have hub run to the store after delivery. I'm thinking a candy jar or something for my room. If i have to stay a few days
Me and my bf were talking about it but we have no idea what
Im not. With my first I don't think I saw the same nurse twice the entire time I was in labour. Even when I went in when I thought I was having contractions this time around I saw 3 diffrent nurses in the 2 hours I was monitored.
Yes...I've got a 'Nurse Bait" basket...got the idea from Pinterest and I've got little gift bags with a candy bar, gum, hand sanitizer and lip balm.
I feel the same way and honestly a little goes a long way!
Small gift for the nurses at the hospital - check!
My labor and delivery nurse gifts :) I made 6 just in case :) 💙
Be honest ladies, as a 27ish year old, would you like this as a wedding gift?

I agree that it's not necessary but it's just a nice gesture. I'm the gift giving type person that tips generously everywhere I go. Last time i was in the l/d I had an amazing nurse and i kept telling myself i would go back and do something nice for her but never did. Thanks ladies for your opinions tho ☺. Some ideas were great!
