My 8 year old was just diagnosed with ADHD, he started a medication regimen which has helped quite a bit, though we obviously still have good days and bad.
After a weekend with his dad (without being given his medication by his dad) we seem to have taken quite a few steps back. He had a really rough day at school and has been very stressed and upset since I got home from work.
This has taken a toll on our family for months and while I know we are at the beginning of a very long journey any advice would be much appreciated. Watching your child struggle can be heartbreaking and exhausting.

You need to speak to his dad and make sure he's on the same page in stability as you. If not it's always going to be a hassle. Always doing good then taking 2 steps back. But if both set the same ground rules things will fall into place. Just a word of advice coming from a mother with a child with many disabilities including adhd.

Find what your son is intrigued by as well. Like an activity. What I found with my son that helped him was puzzles and building toys. Have a calendar and every day that he has or shows good behaviour pit a smiley or sticker, at end of week reward him. Try taking him to parks or even outside if you have a backyard to loose energy. Playdoh too.

The majority though for a better change is stability and consistency...my son also goes to sleep by 830pm everyday and wakes up for bus at 630. They get well rested and are ready to face the day with positive energy.
