I would make sure to tell the doctor that you've tried cold and cough medicines and propping with the pillows. I wouldn't bring up sleep apnea until the doctor tries to brush it off as nothing because some doctors get defensive if you try to tell them what you think it is. If they still don't do anything you can take him to a different doctor and lie to them and say that a different doctor suspects sleep apnea and that you want a second opinion.

@damiensmommy1117 now I'm worried! Lol I'll definitely call his doctor tomorrow then. Do I just tell her all his symptoms or should u push the fact that I think it may be sleep apnea. I know it's rare and that's the last diagnosis they lean towards so I don't want them to just say oh it's a cold because I'm 100% positive it's not just a cold.

It can just suddenly start if something in his body changed, chances are he's coughing because his throat is relaxing too much and it's closing, but his brain is yelling at his lungs to breathe so it forces air through his throat causing it to itch/tickle making him cough.

@c.mdejesus I can try that tomorrow night. He's asleep now so I don't want to wake him after he finally got comfy.

@damiensmommy1117 that was one of the first things that came up on Google but I didn't want to Google diagnos lol I'm hoping it's not that but I think I might give his doctor a call tomorrow. Can sleep apnea just suddenly start like that or could a cough mean it's getting worse?

My mom works in the sleep apnea field so that may be why my mind immediately jumps to that, but what you're describing sounds like child sleep apnea. If nothing works to help him I would get him a consultation with a pediatric sleep specialist.

Maybe try a cool mist vaporizer?

Put him elevated a little with a pillow.
