#momlifegear

Moms,

We'd love to know which diaper disposal/cleaning system (cloth) you use and what you think about it. Tell us why it was great, what the challenges were, why you'd totally buy/register for it again, or why you'd return it. We want to hear it all so our moms can make informed decisions about what to buy for their babies! 😊

Thanks!

Not to mention fabric diapers you average $800 to $1000 plus wipes give or take. One time buy. Disposable average cost a year is $3000 plus wipes. Times that by 3 years or til potty trained, that's at least $9000 a year. That could be a car, or down payment on a house. Plus no harsh chemicals on baby's most absorbant body parts. (On every person young or old). You know your child is safe.

To cut cost even more you can look for used and well taken care of diapers. I prefer used covers and buy new inserts. But inserts can totally be bought used as well. Even buy covers that need minor repairs. Replacing elastic or snaps is totally worth it in the long run and so simple to do.

Just to add... I used parents choice diapers until he was big enough to fit our cloth :) pampers gave him chemical burns and I didn't like the smell and feel of luvs.

Really good info here ladies. We cloth as well I use the bucket system a 5gal from lowes when he was little I used water in it but that's not really needed but I liked it. They went straight to washer after bc it was only breastmilk. At about 8m we changed a little still with same bucket but add a little baking soda at bottom at the end of each night dump bucket in wash but poop I prerinse In tub. If I'm not lazy I take the poop diaper after each change and let it soak until laundry time each night. I always soak the overnight diaper no matter what. We use cloth wipes too. Dry then add water at each change they go in same bucket with diapers. Never had a smell issue yet but he is 11m and still a boob baby. This is the most economical method. I love wet bags and have several for on the go but the bucket is better bc it's easier to clean I think and u can use for other things later. I would like to add most moms spend around 600-1000 like rene_74 says but u can actually cloth for I would say 300 from birth to potty ideally it's better to have a large stash. We have went overboard over here 🙈 there too cute not too 😃

@barefootmom, most people don't pay for water it's a natural resource from a well and if u have gas or electricity your average cost to run your washer off electric is about .01 per load for a reg cycle on a energy efficient washer that's why they have those labels on the products at the appliance stores. Look for energy star logo even if u don't have that I assume if it was double it would still only be 2 cents. For drying well as @rene_74, said you never dry a cover it's an air dry method and air is free. A clothesline is very handy and affordable. U don't even have to use a dryer for prefolds or inserts flat whatever u use although most people do. Your fuel to the store to purchase your disposables and the cost of them or if u pay shipping or even if u don't the trash bags u waste when they r dirty plus the bill u may pay for for garbage man to come pickup trash diaper cream baby wipes all that is much much more than the cost if you count the pennies.

@barefootmom honestly I have never noticed a difference in my water or electric bills from doing diaper laundry. As far as detergent, sure it's a cost but I don't have to buy diaper rash cream ever so... that in my mind cancels that cost out. And if you are speaking of gas as a utility, that isn't a factor for me. We are total electric, so I can't speak personally on that one.

Alva baby for cloth diapers.

Pampers and Huggies for one time use, my husband likes Pampers, I like Huggies better.

Munchkin diaper disposal is the best.

A friend has the diaper genie, I tried it and don't like it. Plus my husband and I are tall, the munchkin is taller. Also replacements for bags are cheaper. Not by much, but they are cheaper.

I started with disposables and three them in individual plastic grocery bags and then into the main garbage bin. No poop smell. By week 3 we recieved our NO BRAND cloth/pul diapers with bamboo inserts. We rinsed the poop with cold water and then it went into a wet pail. We then graduated at 6 weeks to a diaper sprayer that is attached to our toilet. 😍 We love it so much better. With that we changed to a dry diaper bag. We wash with powder surf detergent and a 1/2 cup of antibacterial agent(bleach or pine sol or lysol concentrate ) in 1st wash on hot. 2 more washes cycles without detergent nor bleach. Then 2 cycles in the dryer(Bamboo 5 layer inserts need extra time to dry). No stains, no poop nor urine smell.

@ashleydunn my lil boy had chunky thighs too, but I used that to potty train him. It only took a month but, they've been retired until the next one. I've only used rumparooz. We now do overnight disposable ones and I hate it. But he hates peeing in them. So it's helping him stay dry thru the night.

@rene_74, it depends on brands , I have had the same routine since I started and my bumgenius Flips already have relaxed elastics but my AlVA are fine. My Rumparooz were still good too, I had to stop

Using Rumparooz though because they didn't fit her thighs but they were my fav 😍😭

@ashleydunn yea, I just knew that that's extra wear on them and I knew that I'd have enough to use while they air dried. I was too scared that I'd ruin the elastic. And I think that the instructions on the diapers said or recommended to hang dry. But I never thought of letting the elastic cool fully. If we get pregnant again, I'll remember that tip. Ty 😊

Ответить

@rene_74, you can put covers in dryer as long as dryer is functioning properly just never stiff until elastics are cool

@barefootmom, my water bill went up maybe 4$ . My electric bill no noticible change , I don't use gas. I get a huge container of tide free and gentle 17$ it last me all month. I use it for diapers and regular laundry.

I use a large hanging wetbag to store diapers until laundry day and a small one daily because I'm too lazy to go downstairs with every change 😂😂😂.

I use a bucket and the shower to rinse my poopy diapers then I dump poopy water in toilet and place diaper in wetbag after I squeeze excess water out

@barefootmom When you wait 2-3 days it's one load. If you do it less than that it can add up. But it's as if washing towels or bedding. The cost for us monthly I think went up $3.50 average.

Alva baby cloth pocket diapers dump the poop in the toilet flush it away pull the inserts out, fold it in the diaper, throw it in a hamper until time to wash, dump them in the washer, pre wash+hot Main wash using gain powder detergent and borax for a water softener throw in the dryer done! Super easy and waaaaaayyyy cheaper than disposables

Cloth diapers: my system:: Rumparooz- pre - wash/ soak for 10 min w/ oxyclean in hot water. (depends on machine, just stop if no soak option available). Then rinse in hot/cold water. Then proceed with normal wash and detergent, cold/ rinse cold. Then hang covers to dry. Dry only inserts. NEVER PUT COVER IN DRYER. Takes about a day to dry. I never bleached them. Never had to replace a diaper. Lasted 3 yrs plus. Only have 26 diapers (I think)

I bought a Ubbi Diaper disposal system - works well for my breastfeed 4 month olds diapers. Keeps the smell at bay with only emptying once a week. Easy to clean and wipe down due to it being metal. Lysol it and leave it in the sun when changing bags and youre golden

@melody_momof5 Idk if my diaper genie was broken or I was just doing it wrong but I could not get that diaper into the hole for the life of me. The little flap was so hard to push through and if I had a poo diaper it would end up a disaster. Used it for 2 weeks and was done with it. Was yours like that???
