So my one month old has a lip tie and I'm not sure if it is affecting his latch but breastfeeding is excrutiating. It burns and feels like he's biting me. But then I've heard a lot of people say they feel the burning and pain but it eventually goes away. Is that common to feel? Also, got a nipple shield to try and help. Anyone have any experience with those? Please help, don't want to give up!!
@boymom19, don't be scared! When we got the ties cut, I let my husband hold her cause I just couldn't do it. I also closed my eyes. I brought a bottle to comfort her right after. But, it was a quick process and my lil princess got over it quickly. Thank God!
@mitchy.rice I think I'm going to ask our ped at his appointment this week for a referral to see about getting his cut. I'm terrified because I don't want him in pain but I think they will be better in the long run
My daughter had a tongue tie and lip tie and breastfeeding was very painful at the start. I also used a nipple shield, which did help to alleviate some pain. I decided to get both ties cut. Eventually, breastfeeding got better. Baby and I worked together--I went to a lactation consultant, provided by our birth center, and learned an easier way to latch baby, and baby also got better at latching. I would still have painful moments here and there, but breastfeeding got better and better overall. I also learned that it was best to unlatch her when there was pain and re-latch her.
She cried a lot :( but I think mostly because they had all their fingers in her tiny mouth. The dentist said to expect them to be fussy for the next week or so. But from what I see that heart shape does mean it could be a tongue tie. Good luck at your doctor and let us know what you find out
@gellymoon did it seem to bother her? I don't see the obvious lip tie but the shape of his tongue tipped me off so I googled it and other people say their lo's had tongues like that and they are tied
I will keep you posted! She had an anterior one so I never would've noticed. We actually got the procedure done at a dentist office and was in and out in an hour.
@gellymoon I'm wondering if my son has a tongue tie too, his tongue is heart shaped on the tip, it reminds me of a snake tongue. Please keep me posted how latching goes for you now, going to see his ped on Wednesday and going to ask for a referral for an ent appt
I felt it in the very beginning and my daughter has a lip/tongue tie. The nipple shield made it go away but I think it only masked the problem. I just got her lip/tongue tie fixed today so I will see what happens now. Work with a lactation consultant to see if they can help you though! They are golden!
Breastfeeding always hurts when you first start. I was crying some nights it was so bad.
@boymom19 I tried the nipple shield when I first started. A lactation nurse put it on for me but it was hard to do put it on myself once I got home so i.stopped using it. I felt it wasn't really doing much for me
It could be giving him a hard time latching talk to your dr or a lactation consultant
Nipple shield worked wonder for both mine. As far as the biting sensation it could be cracked nipples or that he only has your nipple in his mouth. I remember that being excruciating. For cracked nipples, lanolin on your breast pads = 1000x better than applying directly to nipples imo
