what can i do if my breasts start to get engorged and are hard? i tried pumping but cant get much out of it because my nipples hurt so much... the milk still comes out on its own... also wanted to know if its too soon to give a pacifier? my son was barely born about five days ago?

might want to try warm compresses around the breast as you push some milk out.

@jmj1988 the lactation consultant told me that you should give them a paci for maybe 5 minutes at a time and then slowly pull it out just enough to satisfy the sucking reflex in the top of their mouth. She said if they scream when you take it then that means theyre still hungry. Also you can try hand expressing to help with your boobs!

you can give baby a pacifier whenever you want. hospitals normally give them after their born anyway unless you refuse. just make sure you keeping up with how much and when baby eats so he'll get it...its not a big deal momma, your doing great!@jmj1988

I was told it's not recommended until atleast a month old because they could confuse it with feeding and not actually get the nutrients that they need; the sucking motion stimulates their brain to feel more full. My MIL says it's really not a big deal. All of her kids had stomach issues so they always had pacifiers and it never hurt them.
