@ciraclesmiracle, I love all fruit I haven't had much Apple lately I got 10 packs of blackberries I forgot to post my pic I was able to eat 6 and put the rest n freezer. I scored these for a buck also I ordered my groceries online from Kroger it's amazing my husband picked them up curbside
Honeycrisp and Opal apples are my favorite. Apple slices and walnuts are one of my favorite snacks! I keep hearing about online grocery shopping, but haven't tried it!
@lisa_gandy, u should check out Pyrex snapware it's awesome bc the bowls r freezer oven dishwasher and microwave safe and pretty enough to serve in but yet functional bc they have lids. I have 4 sets lol
@ciraclesmiracle, I will have to try opal I don't believe I have we buy a ton of gala bc they r on sale often. Honeycrisp is yummy I get them often if I go to farmer market but I haven't got out much these days. Yes the online shopping is amazing I do serveral types to get my stuff 1. Bountiful basket u pick up sat morn but it's hard now to get baby out so my volunteer neighbor friend drops it by and I give her 5bucks. 2. Google express awesome for Costco but u can't get cold food 3. Kroger curbside they have a separate parking lot and everything although I don't go my husband says it's easy I just started doing this one. We plan to purchase 1/2 a cow (grass fed) around Jan 28 it should be ready we seen them back in October. Also we want to invest in a farm u do quartet payments and get 42 weeks of produce. It actually starts tomorrow they only except 32 families per year. It's all organic while bountiful basket isn't. The farm ends up about 6.00 more per week I think it's worth it. I have to sign a contract by Jan 10 if u wanna do it last year we debated and didn't I also didn't eat meat for 11 months.
Investing in a farm sounds amazing!!! There are tons of farms about 2 hours away from where I live (Los Angeles), but I've never heard of such a thing! My sister lives in upcountry Maui (cowboy country) and she would get a half a grass fed cow and deep freeze it. I wish we could do it, but we don't have the space for a deep freeze. I remember you saying you got one a few weeks ago. I only buy organic grass fed meats, pastured butter and line caught fish. My sister worked in Alaska over the summer and sent us 10lbs of halibut. It's so delicious! I was vegetarian for about 12 years and vegan for a year, and we still eat a lot of vegetarian food, but I compromised on eating meat a couple times a week as long as it's the best quality, organic and free range.
@ciraclesmiracle, dang 2 hr here in Texas there are farms everywhere but sadly we are a very obese state I don't get it. My grandpa raised cattle & was a farmer he gave feed on the reg bc fat cows sell better than lean cows that's why i stopped eating meat during my pregnancy bc I remember all the stuff I seen growing up and know that's not how we should eat. The farm thing is actually called a CSA u can look it up. The farm is a small one 14 acres but about 5 mins from us so that's really good. About bountiful basket its like food co op it's good but not local. I have asked about GMO but they don't really give u that info etc. I still haven't got my freezer we bought it day after cheer Monday but it was out of stock and soonest they could deliver was dec 30 but we need to take out laundry room cabinets so we rescheduled it for arrival on Jan 7 I will post a pic I'm beyond excited.thats great u have so many options for food. I hope to move back to the country before Luke starts school but we are on the fence about selling now.
I couldn't agree more about the way that animals are raised. I buy my meat from the health food market or from a ranch that sells free range, grass-fed beef, free range chicken and pastured eggs at the farmers market. When I see how cheap meat is at the regular grocery store I'm horrified. The meat and eggs that I buy are raised "right" and costs like 6-8 times more than the stuff at the grocery store because the ranchers/farmers only raise and slaughter a fraction of what the "factory farms" do. And it's amazing what a difference there is in taste and smell. Grocery store eggs and chicken have a strong sulfur smell to me, and the pastured egg yolks are a deep orangey-yellow--even the egg shells are different! Grass fed beef has so much more flavor and so much less fat, and pastured butter has a much yellower color and much more flavor. I would much rather spend extra and know the source of my meat and eggs, and eat less of it. We don't eat meat at every meal and we generally eat smaller portions or use meat as more of a "seasoning". Like today I cooked a whole pot of black eyed peas with pork, but I only used 6oz of pork--just enough to give some flavor and richness.
Thanks for the info on the CSA! I'm going to look into it and see if it's something that we can do around here, or if it's something we might be able to do later on if we move out of the city.
