" stuff was all neutral, so if I had any younger siblings it would've been easy to hand it down and not feel obligated to buy more gender specific stuff

When we have our second we won't find out. It's much easier than I figured really...at least for us. When we had our daughter, we bought all the "big" items in purple. Now, whatever we have for our second, we will just need to buy clothes.
