My son will not stfu and pay attention in class, it's driving me crazy!!! It started last yr and picked right up this yr. Every day I'm getting notes from the teacher. He's 8, 3rd grade. Anyone experience this? And what did you do to fix it???
My son has ADHD, I chose not to medicate him when he was diagnosed in kindergarten. The school suggested it but I chose against it, after a barrage of psychological testing they seen my son was more advanced than those his age and once given harder level work his behavior did a complete 360. My reason against the ADHD meds is a personal one, my stepson's mom has had him on it since age 3 and I seen what he went through on it, same as my niece and nephew. Instead I sought alternative methods and paid to take a parenting class for children with ADHD, they gave me a lot methods in which to work with him and his behavior as well as understand what he's going through. The best thing that worked for my son was his teachers would separate him from group seating and put his desk near them or face him away from everyone else which cut his distractions and he was a straight A student because of it. I tell all of his teachers it's a good method for him, also having an option like reading if they finish work too early really does help too :)
Yeah they put my little brother in special Ed because he wouldn't do the work just talk talk talk , now his teacher calls my mother like every two days during class and my mom has to tell him to do his work n stop talking . They are gonna evaluate him & see if he has ADHD he's 7 . I think all kids have problems learning with other kids around . They play too much . Especially since my brother is the youngest we don't play w him @ home . Lack of friends at home makes him go to school & just wanna run his mouth n play all day w his friends before he goes home
You're welcome. I hope that helps. @bianca_rose
Awesome, going to do some research tonight, thank you!! @withlovedkj
In short, it is Counseling for children. Highly effective for kids with problems in school and informative for parents . @bianca_rose
I had started punishments of writing sentences then stopped, so maybe I'll go back to that. I've never heard of a play therapist @withlovedkj
Taking away things at home that he enjoys may not solve the behavior at school. The punishment should match the behaviors. He should be punished with doing additional school work at home, writting lines etc. Before concluding that he may have ADHD, you may want to see if be can see a Play Therapist to help figure out whats going on. @bianca_rose
Thank you so much, you're right, I am going to talk to dr and rule out any other issues @mommy2be711
Yea but he will always come up with an excuse because he might not know what exactly is going on. ADHD screws you up. I just wish my parents payed attention and got me help because I guarantee I would be doing better for myself then I am now. I went back to college and got all As and Bs after I found out what was wrong with me.
@jensim82011 yes, you're right, he does always have to be doing something with his hands, the problem is teachers don't allow kids to do anything while they teach
I do ask him, I always talk before punishments and it's always an excuse about someone else talking and making him talk @mommy2be711 yeah maybe I'll make an appt with the pedi
I do that and he gets so upset, but then after a couple days it's the same behavior @itsjasmine maybe I don't take away things for long enough period of time
Could be he needs to be moving while learning. For example, playing patty cake with his hands on the desk while listening to instruction.
honestly... I was exactly like that I had to retake 3rd grade. for me (not saying its the same thing just advice) no matter how much I tried to focus I couldn't... I just didn't understand anything. I slipped by school with Ds maybe you need to sit down with him and have a talk. ask him what's going on. I got disciplined but frustrated me that no one cared enough to ask me what was wrong. I just got diagnosed with adhd... maybe he has something and doesn't understand it. talk to a dr
Have you tried taking away toys and games etc? Anything fun until he straightens up? Goodies? Sometimes kids act up and they know they have games and stuff at home so they're not worried about what you have to say
Oh ok. Do you think other kids are distracting him? Sometimes teachers have low tolerance for disruptions in classes but they never try to find a solution for students, instead they move towards disciplinary actions. @bianca_rose
Is he bored in class? Does he finish his assignments before other classmates?
