I'm at first time mom, and my daughter is 5 weeks old. she lost over 15% of her body weight before we even left the hospital, due to being premature and me breastfeeding. since then I have struggled breastfeeding. we were in the hospital a couple weeks before her discharge and at a week old we started supplementing with formula because she is obviously getting not nearly enough from me.. we are supplementing with formula to this day still. I have never experienced a 'let-down', not while breastfeeding, or pumping either. I need some advice so I know what I'm doing wrong and how to fix it. I would like to eventually stop supplementing with formula and exclusively breastfeed. why have a never experienced a let down? why can I only pump a half ounce to an ounce every 6 to 8 hours? i have tried fenugreek, and my daughter has a good latch. is this a lost cause for me? or is there hope for me and something, anything I can do? advice please, im willing to try anything! thank you in advance.

My daughter was small too 4 pounds 8 ounces , not a preemie, but has since gained weight and is right on target. I was a preemie too( 1 pound 4oz and 3 months early), but you would never know it now

I would cut the formula out completely myself. If she loses weight in more than two weeks I would worry. That's why the doctor usually checks their weight once they are born and every few weeks or so .

@lalamichelle0707, should I cut out all formula then? I'm terrified to do so because of how much weight she lost in the beginning (and was preemie to begin with, so already was too small) but I've been told to stop supplementing completely. otherwise I wont know if she is going to be okay on just breastfeeding. I'd like to try it, I think I should get a scale first so I can monitor her myself.

Look for her cues to determine whether she's Hungry she may be cluster feeding at the moment. If you put her on the breast even when she isn't hungry every two hours and do skin to skin too it will boost your supply

Most moms don't think babies get enough, but babies usually do. There's a great chart out on Google which tells how much baby should be drinking at this age.

thank you @lalamichelle0707, I have yet to try lactation cookies but have heard they help! I just worry she doesn't get anything from me so I always follow it with a bottle of formula. I'm going to try nipple shields, so I can make sure she is latching just like she should, too.

@jazmin805, I didn't know that that made a difference, changing the settings like that to get the let down. im definitely going to try it out, I've never pumped more than an ounce. and it's only happened on a few occasions, so hopefully that works!

Babies typically lose weight after birth so I wouldn't worry too much, babies are rarely undernourished while breastfeeding. There's a great movie about breastfeeding on Netflix produced by Ricki Lake called Breastfeeding.

Lactation cookies and drink lots of water, pump every two hours to get supply up too. Keep with fenugreek as well. Good luck @jesscami
