Question mommies, maybe you can help me end the self-debate: My girl has had an ear infection and is gettimg better but had the runs for almost a week straight and lost some weight...she was 19lbs 8oz at her 9 month WIC appointment but was fully clothed and I think her diaper was full of pee. At her doctor's appointment the next day she weighed in at 18lbs 13oz I believe, and was fully naked and it was early in the morning so she hadn't eaten much yet...(just accounting for the huge difference here in weight in only one day)...anyways, at the urgent care the other day (now 11 months) she only weighed 19lbs 12oz, which if we go by her doctor's appointment weight she only gained 1lb in 2 months which is not her norm cuz she has been gaining 1lb per month since about 6 months which should be normal, and the nurse blew it off and said probably because she had the runs so much...so my long drawn out question is this: Is it normal for them to lose weight with the runs and how can I help her gain it back by her 1 year appointment in 3 weeks?? I'm not saying I want to fatten her up I just wanna make sure she stays in the higher percentiles and doesn't drop down dramatically on the charts because I don't want the doctor to think I am not feeding her enough...she is starting to eat solids again as she feels better and has been nursing like a newborn 8 or 9 times a day, so I know she is getting the nutrition she needs just don't want her to go down from the 70%ile to who knows where...so what easy solid food can I give to help weight gain and should I try and nurse just as often or more?? I ask because of conflicting research, some say solids can help with weight gain and others say that breastmilk is higher in good fats and can help weight gain better than solids can...opinions mommies??
(P.S. sorry all my posts are long and drawn out lol)
that could be why! my daughter got strep throat a few months ago and she didn't want to eat anything solid and had diarrhea the entire time she was on them!!! my daughter primarily eats solids at this point so we substituted some of that and helped with her runs by giving her smoothies I made with fruit and yogurt and milk!! mostly berries and spinach for the antioxidants and yogurt for the probiotics!! @hellosweetie
Thank you! I also worry cuz she is refusing solids mostly, only will eat a bit of yoghurt so far today and she usually enjoys eating all sorts of things...I'm guessing her tummy feels upset? And she was walking a lot then got sick and isn't trying to walk, just crawling and cruising....@autumnrae,
Of course! Babies/toddlers bodies know what they need! A percentile is only a number and at the end of the day what matters is your baby is active and happy! Goodluck and try not to worry too much(i know we are moms it's what we do) but just thank god your little one is feeling better!
You are right though @autumnrae, I just gotta trust it more that she is doing fine....thanks for reminding me lol
You are so right, I know this lol I am just so worried the doctor will tell me to cut back on nursing and do more solids like I am doing things wrong! My girl has been in the 80%ile for weight most of her life and 70%ile the last couple check ups cuz she got a lot more active...and over 80%ile for height! It makes me super nervous that she's dropping down all the sudden, just not used to it I guess haha...I mean she grew about an inch since her last check up so that's good I hope! 29.5 inches now! @autumnrae
just give her what she needs/wants! if her body needs it due to the weight loss she will want the calories! if not she will be okay!! my 14 month old weighs 18 lbs and is healthy as can be! her weight fluctuates like this slot! sometimes she will gain slot in a month and others she will gain none!
That's kinda what I was thinking lol but wasn't sure what the best route would be, she nurses a little less often when I do solids too...@allyk.xmommy,
Okay, thanks! She has been refusing solids since the got sick, then we found out it was an ear infection poor thing...my girl has never been sick! She still was nursing between 6 to 8 times a day before getting sick and not is nursing even more and not eating...I'll keep it up with some yoghurt blends and see if that helps!
