Maybe look on ancestry.com for your family names before your last name was assigned to them. or maybe use one of the their first names as a way to pay your respects to them?

@showersoverflowers, that's actually a really good idea! I don't know anything about my past other than we've been in Mississippi for centuries. My dad grew up picking cotton and told me that he actually liked it and wants to work on a farm again, lol. Hopefully there's more power in my ancestors.

I have heard it can be pretty tough to track down clear paths but it's worth trying. My mom dug deep into our Native side and found tons of name assignments, forced marriages, and kidnappings. It's sad that these people went through tons of horrific things but it makes you respect their perseverance even more.
