I am a first time mommy and I am breast feeding. I was told that there are certain foods I must avoid so the baby doesn't have tummy aches or gas problems. I'm Hispanic and so my
Mom is Mexican and she is always telling me I can't eat watermelon and other things. Obviously I know spicy foods are a no no. I was also told a cup of coffee wouldn't do harm, and I want to drink coffee but want to make sure it really doesn't affect my baby. My bf's mother also tells me I need to be covered all the time or my boobs will get dry and I won't produce any milk. Idk what to believe and what are Mexican myths. Any thoughts on what foods I should really avoid if I am breast feeding?
broccoli as crazy as it sounds makes my babies gassy. Coffee is safe drink also in moderation
@jaeparm, I did check that website out but I try to avoid believe or going by everything that is posted on websites.
I actually have been chewing trident peppermint gum and idk if that counts too @dohmommy2016
Thank you for the response @myliltadpole1116 I've heard many things that sound so absurd so that's why idk what to think or believe. According to my doctor I was told I had no restrictions on food when I got discharged and the only thing he told me to avoid drinking was coffee but then I heard that there are moms who breast feed and have coffee and their babies are fine. I've actually avoided alcohol for good and don't plan on drinking the occasional beer until I'm done breast feeding for good. It's crazy how I miss coffee more than beer/alcohol. I plan on breast feeding until she is at least 9 months and if I could go the whole year than even better. Thank you for the advices 🙂
kellymon.com will answer so many of your questions!
garlic, dairy and beans can make baby gassy. if you drink alcohol and are ok to drive you're OK to nurse.
The only food you have to for sure avoid is peppermint due to it having the possibility of decreasing milk supply. alcohol in moderation is fine. caffeine in moderation is fine. I still eat spicy food doesn't bother my son. I do limit my diary but my son is sensitive to it.
P.s my in-laws are very traditional and while they have been understanding to my "white" ways I've heard a few things that just make me chuckle lol
Every baby is different , as a rule of thumb I try to avoid anything you wouldn't really eat while pregnant. Spicy can make them gassy. A cup or two of coffee is okay. It has more to do with caffeine than anything. I believe 200mg is the limit that you should consume. Some medications contain caffeine like excedrin(safe but always ask dr) . My son is lactose intolerant and it took months to figure it out. Certain foods or drinks can affect your supply. Your breasts will be just fine unclothed. Lol nipples actually get tougher if u avoid bras and breastfeeding may hurt less. Also our milk is a gods gift when it comes to sore nipples(air drying is a must if u do it) energy drinks are a no-no too for a few reasons lol. Alcohol , no need to pump and dump. They've found that it metabolizes out of ur milk as it does with your blood. If ur too buzzed to drive, too buzzed to breastfeed.. But once your okay, your okay. There's so much but if I miss anything feel free to message or ask.🙃
Keep an eye out with dairy. Learned the hard way with that one.
