Moms,
We've seen lots of posts about moms trying to naturally induce labor quite early. If you are interested in this kind of information, you should seek the advice of a medical professional because every pregnancy is different. For educational purposes and without any judgement, here is what the March of Dimes states about babies born too early. We will also post this on our blog this weekend.
Babies born too early may have more health problems at birth and later in life than babies born later. Being pregnant 39 weeks gives your baby's body all the time it needs to grow.
Here's why your baby needs 39 weeks:
Important organs, like his brain, lungs and liver, get the time they need to develop.
He is less likely to have vision and hearing problems after birth.
He has time to gain more weight in the womb. Babies born at a healthy weight have an easier time staying warm than babies born too small.
He can suck and swallow and stay awake long enough to eat after he's born. Babies born early sometimes can't do these things.
Can scheduling an early birth cause problems for you and your baby?
Yes. Experts are learning that scheduling an early birth for non-medical reasons can cause problems for mom and baby. Below are examples of problems that can happen when a birth is scheduled too soon for a non-medical reason.
Your due date may not be exactly right.
Sometimes it's hard to know just when you got pregnant. Even with an ultrasound, your due date can be off by as much as 2 weeks. If you schedule to induce labor or schedule a cesarean birth (also called a c-section) and your date is off by a week or 2, your baby may be born too early.
Inducing labor may cause problems for you and your baby.
These can include:
Stronger and more frequent contractions. This happens for many women. Contractions are when the muscles of your uterus get tight and then relax.
Possible infections
Uterine rupture. This is when the uterus tears during labor. It happens very rarely.
Inducing labor may not work.
If your labor is induced, the medicine your doctor or certified nurse-midwife (also called CNM) gives you may not start your labor. When this happens, you may need to have a c-section.
A c-section can cause problems for your baby.
Babies born by c-section may have more breathing and other medical problems than babies born by vaginal birth. (Most babies are born by vaginal birth. The mother's uterus contracts to help push the baby out through the vagina, also called the birth canal.)
C-sections can cause problems in future pregnancies.
Once you have a c-section, you may be more likely in future pregnancies to have a c-section. The more c-sections you have, the more problems you and your baby may have, including problems with the placenta.
A c-section is major surgery for mom.
It takes longer for you to recover from a c-section than from a vaginal birth. You can expect to spend 2 to 4 days in the hospital after a c-section. Then you need about 4 to 6 weeks after you go home to fully recover. You also may have complications from the surgery, like infections and bleeding. So it's important to stay in touch with your health care provider even after you go home.
Please talk to your doctor or midwife about this topic. Share your respectful thoughts and we'll add it to our article.
Thanks,

Yes! I love this! so many mamas trying to induce way too early, not understanding it could harm baby. I understand some babies come early on their own but that's completely different then trying to self induce. Baby needs to come naturally without help, and on its own! I will be induced at 39 weeks but it's for health reasons, not by demand.

Thank you for this post! As a mom who needed an emergency c section at 33 weeks with twins and watching my babies sit in the NICU at 3lbs and almost losing my little boy to NEC, I'm a complete advocate of letting babies cook as long as they need. Yes, the wait and the final weeks can be unbearable (I know because I carried my oldest daughter to 39 weeks, 5 days), but the health of a baby for their entire life starts with care in the womb. I don't believe in induction (unless medically necessary or baby is past due). I urge all moms to get completely educated because from having my oldest completely healthy and natural, to having a c section and watching my twins grow in an isolet for a 5 weeks, I would definitely prefer the latter ♡ Good luck to all soon to be mommies!

About time because they need to be educatated on this so they have healthy babies and know a baby born to early is a huge health risk!

Thank you for this!!! It worried me to see so many people getting induced. Doctors and their recommendations shouldn't be just blindly trusted.

I was induced at 36 weeks due to health issues and luckily my baby was born completely healthy and 8 lbs 3 oz. but I did have to have a c section after labor failed. I truly believe if we had waited even 1 more week we could have done it without a c section. But we couldn't risk it.

Thank you for posting. It is great information to have.

THANK YOU for addressing this! As a preemie mom it gets me really ticked off when mom's talk about inducing themselves before baby is ready to come out. Please post this regularly so every member can read it!

throughout my pregnancy I always use to say as long as I made it to 37 weeks I'd be happy because at one point in time it was considered full term. well, when my daughter came on her own at 37 weeks it made me realize that I really wished she would have stayed in the last few weeks. although she was completely healthy, strong and thriving she was a tiny little peanut at 5 pounds 13oz 18 inches long. I wish she would have stayed in there longer to grow more and mature a little more. I am more than thankful for a healthy baby however if I had the choice i would have definitely went through those last few weeks.

My son was born 38+6 weeks and came out perfectly fine I also had let him come on his own I didn't try to induce labor or nothing all I did was squats and exercise. My son came on his own with no health issues nor needed a C-section I CHOSE to have a C-section ... Then again every pregnancy is different you don't even know what the mom is going through so before you judge you shouldn't jump down someone's throat because that's their choice on what they want to do with their baby......

This post was really needed and very informative. It's one thing to go into labor naturally but to try and self induce I've learned the hard way about that

Exactly! Thanks for this because I get sick of tired of these grown woman complaining about having only a few short weeks left of pregnancy! What's so hard about just waiting it out! Smh!

It's one thing to go into labor on your own or having to be induced for the health of mom and or baby, but this was needed and should be reposted frequently. I went into labor on my own at 41 weeks 3 days and those last weeks went by so slow. I would have been induced at 42weeks. Possiby sooner if i had not changed to a midwife. He was born vaginally, 8lbs 15oz no health issues at all. I still had to be given pitocin to help my contractions get stronger. Everyone can do what they want but i have read stories of moms losing their baby as a result of self induction.

This definitely had to be said. As much as I want my son in my arms right now, I know he still has some crucial development to go through. And I hate seeing moms who are trying to induce labor at 32-36 weeks. Baby's not ready momma! Gotta push through a bit longer for the sake of your baby

Totally needed to see this here at 42+1. I feel like I'm doing the right thing by waiting but when is the cut off? Every time I go in I'm threatened with paperwork and forced to induce even though we are both doing well. I'm trusting my body here but it's hard when everyone else is scaring you with stillbirth and placenta degradation talk. Sigh

@mamamoonbaby, best of luck! I hung in there with my first too and don't regret it one bit. Like you said trust your body and let the process start on its own. I completely understand women that have health issues and have to have interventions but honestly the safest place for your baby until it comes is in your womb. Cherish those moments and kicks because you'll miss them soon. Birth is beautiful ❤️

This is what I'm so fearful for is early birth! I'm 32 weeks and 70% thinned and baby is in position. we haven't been doing anything to induce me or try too just my normal activity. I hope he's ready if he does come early but I really don't mind waiting. Glad this was posted.

yessss thank you for the info! my daughter came on her own at 38wks but was jaundice and I had to constantly worry about her getting better...Ino it's a small worry but if she coulda stayed a week maybe she wouldn't have had that problem and I would've had one less stress factor while being a ftm which comes with MANY stress factors lol

@ashley_abby20, didn't feel that anyone jumped down anyone else's throat. This is just a very informative post about trying to INDUCE labor ON YOUR OWN. Many women will try sometimes dangerous methods to get baby out and it just isn't worth it. Baby will come when baby is ready.

My water broke at 36 weeks and 5 days. Thanks to the risk of infection the hospital started pitocin so he could come out without having to have a c section. He was born at 37 weeks. I would do anything to get him back in for the other three weeks. He has jaundice. He is on a biliblanket as I type. He sleeps a lot. He isn't a normal newborn because he came early. I hate it. I can't help but think that he would have been all better had he stayed in until June 28th like he was supposed to. Yes, his lungs are developed. Yes, he is going great and got to come home but those few extra weeks could have eliminated this whole jaundice mess.

Is there a point of keeping baby in over due date that leads to more csections? I'm fairly certian I will go over but I really don't want a Csection. I am thinned and dilated but I'm just afraid he will be to big as they have said he is a big baby

@lanabug08, I NEVER said anyone was jumping down anyone's throat I feel every one just has there own opinion about this and I told mine...

I wanted to wait for my baby to come on her own but my doctor stripped my membranes without even asking...I was glad she did because I was so uncomfortable and my daughter was born on her due date but I just wanted her to come naturally, on her own time.
Ashley😘·
@jaylensmom, See my baby came on his own at 38+6 weeks not cause I did everything to make him come out he just decided on his own to come alot of women judge on here about this that's why I'm saying to each his own...Also there are a lot of women who have FULL TERM babies an have odee problems so it's just a natural thing if you ask me... Idk why preggie posted this post it's dumb af an it's just asking for problems

@preggie_usa, Yeah I know I understand but everyone who's giving there honest opinion on here is definitely referring to those Mom's who do try to jump start there labor OK? that's there own opinion why would there even b a post on attacking them about it we all know that doesn't even honestly work so why bring up the topic again I mean it is there babies so Idk if a post will change there point of views on it....Hey I gave my opinion an a girl quickly thought something else an then had to mention me on it but hey to each his own I respect everyone opinions on here whether I like it or not so I would want the same too.....NOT having a problem with anything just simply giving my opinion.
