This may be a dumb question but I am about to have my baby girl any day now and plan on breastfeeding her. How long do you let them eat for and do you make sure they are feeding on both breasts each time? I do have a pump but not sure where to start. If you can help thank you. I'm clueless and FTM so thanks in advance for any advice ❤️

Depends on baby, some nurse on both boobs (greedy, like mine lol) some will settle on one boob and you will offer the next boob at the next feeding. Because breast milk is so high in nutrients baby can be hungry like 20 minutes later. So feed on demand every 1 to 3 hours. Unless you are wanting an overstock of milk, I wouldn't pump until after 6 weeks. Because your body won't know it's producing for a pump and will fill back really quickly to try and satisfy baby. This will make you work harder (nothing wrong with it, I did it because I like to have an overstock) It will last 6 months in a freezer. In the hospitals most lactation nurse will come and help and anwser all of your questions as well. Good luck, hope this helps a bit.

You're very welcome! Like I said, I wish someone would've laid it out like that for me. And yes, the benefits to your child beat the pain 100%.

In my hospital they taught me to feed on one breast and switch breasts each feeding. I still do that. Unless you aren't producing enough milk and need to feed off of both breasts. I would try doing one at a time so you're not as sore. But I'm going to be straight up honest, because I wish someone was with me. Unless your one of the lucky few, it's going to be painful when your milk comes in and you're going to need to pump. Don't wait, don't stay engorged, and when you do pump make sure you're emptying your breasts as much as possible. That will prevent you from staying engorged and developing mastitis. Make sure you have nipple cream! And I'd go ahead and have some nipple shields for in case there comes a day that it's just too painful to nurse, they'll protect your nipples and allow you to nurse still. As far as feeding times, it'll depend on the baby of course, but in general the first few days it's just going to be colostrum that you're producing so i'd say they'll feed about every 1-2 hours. Mine would stay on my boob for 45 min- to an hour at a time. So just be prepared for baby to be on your boob constantly, lol. Definitely pump every hour if you can. At one point I never slept, and if I did it was only 10-20 min at a time bc I'd have to set my alarms to get up every hour and pump. Preparing yourself mentally for all of it I think would help a ton. I was completely unprepared and unaware of everything when it came to breastfeeding and it made things harder emotionally and physically. I went through mastitis and thrush 2x each and it was rough, I'm not gonna lie. But my son is 4m now and we're still going strong, it stopped hurting once he reached 8-9 weeks. And it's like second nature now, you got this! Good luck and have a safe delivery!

Thank you @valrocks that helps a lot! I just was not sure bc I haven't taken any classes and my mom only breastfeed us for like a month I think and it was so long ago for her so I have no one else to ask ❤️

I'm new at this too but I'm a pumper and I latch him on sometimes. From what I understand you let them am feed as long as they stay on the breast. They'll let you know when they're done. And as far as the pumping I do 30 min every 3-4 hours, both breast a the same time. through out the day. I latch him on more at night. Eating oatmeal and lactation cookies helps to produce more milk also.
