I was told to lay your baby on your chest and it'll move around and find your breast by itself. It should not be that painful. If it is that means your baby does not have a good latch. Call the hospital and ask about lactation services. Go to wic for breastfeeding help. Look for a LLL in your area. Don't give up without getting some help first.

I went through the same thing because my son had a strong latch. They have nipple shields also put a warm wash cloth on your breasts

Hot cloths before you nurse, ice packs or gel soothing nipple pads along after you nurse and nipple cream. The hot cloths with a little massage worked wonders for me!

It just soothes the pain and softens everything up.
