Birth is a magical moment that you don’t really understand until you’ve gone through it yourself. We asked moms in the Preggie community if they had any childbirth and postpartum advice for new moms. Here are 24 real “surprises” they wanted to share.
1️⃣→ Hemorrhoids
💬 I’ve got one word for this, hemorrhoids. Either way you deliver, you don’t get out of it lol.
2️⃣→ How bad your hormones are after birth
💬 I had it really bad the first two weeks after birth. Felt like someone died and thought I was crazy for being sad and crying all the time. It Was horrible but dr assured me it was temporary and he was right. The shift in hormones is a bitch.
💬 Definitely the baby blues.
💬 The hormones that follow giving birth make pregnancy hormones seem like child’s play.
3️⃣→ Pooping during delivery
💬 The fact that you might or WILL crap all over for everyone to see.
4️⃣→ Epidural pain
💬 And not one told me how bad my back would hurt from the epidural afterwards, I could not stand straight my back hurt more than my vagina 😭
💬 They don’t tell you about the massive migraine that lasts two weeks from the epidural!!
💬 No one mentioned the shock that travels down your leg while getting an epidural 👀👀
5️⃣→ Peeing on yourself
💬 That you may pee yourself after birth for example when I was laughing and peed myself while in the hospital and peed myself without knowing I had to go so not know when you had the urge to pee.
6️⃣→ Vagina pain
💬 The stinging and burning while peeing for weeks after, how bad pp sex will hurt omg
💬 How swollen you can get after delivery.
💬 How bad it would hurt to go to the bathroom afterwards. And that your water would just keep leaking like you were peeing your pants for a long time after breaking.
The pitocin doesn’t stop after the baby you still will get it to help your cervix close and your bleeding to slow.
7️⃣→ All the different types of labor pain
💬 Back labor!! 😭😭
💬 Everyone knows that back labor is a thing, but NOBODY told me that hip labor is a thing!!
💬 You may not always feel the pain on your back….you might feel it in your bum and it will feel like you have to take a 💩💩 and you’ll want to push but try not too until the doctors says too!! lol
8️⃣→ Postpartum tummy
💬 How your stomach will look terrible but just be patient for a few months. I wasn’t prepared for the mess my tummy was.
9️⃣→ The bleeding
💬 Postpartum bleeding! The adult diapers and massive pads, the perineum cleaning bottle, the witch hazel and the numbing spray! Did I mention the massive pp bleeding??
I was NOT prepared and it took me 3 weeks of heavy bleeding to stop…just to start my first period a week later.
🔟→ Tearing, episiotomy and stitches
💬 Having stiches when they cut me hurt more than having a natural birth
💬 Discharge 😑 no one told me about discharge!
1️⃣1️⃣→ C-section pain and recovery
💬 No one told me anything about my c section or anything related to it. And no one told me about 6 weeks of bleeding and no sex. But also no one told me that I would recover so quickly and easily.
💬 My c section. Puking and shaking uncontrollably during the whole surgery. Then not being able to anything on my own. It was worse than hell.
1️⃣2️⃣→ Best way to push
💬 What my sister in law told me is when I’m pushing DO NOT PUSH LIKE YOU HAVE TO POP push like you have to take a hard pee.
💬 The determination to get that baby out is unequivocal.
1️⃣3️⃣→ Everyone’s recovery time varies
💬 The recovery, I couldn’t walk for almost 2 weeks I just cried. Being in serious pain & not being able to help yourself (walk, shower, go to the bathroom) it makes it very hard to take care of a newborn. I’m 4 weeks pp and just now starting to feel better- did I mention about how it feels to go to the bathroom or deal with a UTI and Uterus infection from delivery? All worth it though.
💬 That recovery is faster and easier than people make it sound. yes, I was sore for a few days, but I’m 13 days pp now and I feel TOTALLY normal, it’s crazy to me.
I actually thought it was easier than what people described. Labor sucked, but my delivery was only 15 mins and I was up walking and showering just a couple hours after delivery.
💬 How fast i recovered!!! All i heard was terrifying stories about the delivery n pain.. 💬 But it was AMAZING all NATURAL AND JUST went by fast n smooth 😊😊
1️⃣4️⃣→ Nursing contractions
💬 Nursing contractions, holy cow I was not prepared and they get more painful with each baby.
💬 The cramps you have after while breast feeding😭 I love my feeding times with my daughter but damn these hurt bad.
1️⃣5️⃣→ Stool softeners and pooping pain
💬 The soreness afterwards for weeks sometimes. It’s a lot more painful that I was expecting with my first child. especially if you have to have stitches from an episiotomy! stool softeners are so important after giving birth too!!!
💬 no one told me how much it would hurt to poop after !!!!💩💩💩😭😳😳😳😷
💬 The first 💩 after delivery. Did I mention the pain?
1️⃣6️⃣→ Teeth chattering and the shivers
💬 I had the teeth chattering and shivers even without an epidural. that was one thing I wasn’t prepared for! and the feeling after the shoulders are out and the baby just slips right out the rest of the way lol is a really weird feeling!!
💬 The teeth chattering and shivers from the epidural was very annoying. How weird it feels once the babies sholders are out and the rest just kinda falls. And everyone said that you basically give birth twice, once for baby and once for the placenta, well my doctor just kinda pushed on my tummy to get the placenta out. And how uncomfortable the stitches are in your kachina for weeks. But how it is all worth it for your child💙💚
1️⃣7️⃣→ Normal but weird newborn stuff
💬 What I didn’t know was about newborns was the clogged tear duct and baby acne.
1️⃣8️⃣→ Contractions after birth
💬 The contractions after birth. Not cool lol
💬 And no one tells you that you still have contractions after you give birth during the healing process.
1️⃣9️⃣→ Leaky boobs
💬 I needed diapers in my bra because these little breast pads wasn’t working LOL
2️⃣0️⃣→ Gallbladder problems
💬 I’m really grumpy that I didn’t know it was really common to have gallbladder problems. all of my nurses were like “been having issues” me “no, never but I did just have a baby” them “oh hmm yup that’ll do it” what..what no one said anything to me to keep an eye out for it.
2️⃣1️⃣→ Baby sleep
💬 Training your baby to go to sleep on a schedule. Otherwise, you’ll have a horrible life!
2️⃣2️⃣→ First night home with a newborn
💬 Mine was very easy. Only 4 hours and 15 minutes of pushing. But no one tells you how hard the first night with a new born is.
💬 I actually thought it was easier than what people described. Labor sucked, but my delivery was only 15 mins and I was up walking and showering just a couple hours after delivery
2️⃣3️⃣→ Hair loss
💬 How much hair I would lose after 😮. but it grows back 😃
2️⃣4️⃣→ Not all babies cry when born
💬 That not all babies cry after they have been born all three of my kids didn’t cry at all once they put them on my chest all three just stared at me until the nurse took them away and took blood from them then they cried.

Y did i read this?? I deliver next week hopefully. I should not have read this...
Jesus. Way too scare everyone. Glad I didn't read this before labor
Epidurals don't work on everyone. I got an epidural and was so happy until it wore off after 2 hrs. I ended up feeling every contraction and had horrible back labor along with it. Also, not everything is going to go the way you planned. I was in active labor for 23 hrs. I was so determined to have a natural delivery and was so disappointed that after 23 hrs it ended up in a csection. Then because I got a fever during labor they were worried my baby might have got an infection while in utero. So right after my csection I got to see my baby for about 2 mins and then they took him straight to to NICU for 12 hours of antibiotics and to be monitored. That was so hard for me. All I wanted to do was hold my baby but I couldn't. When I finally got him in my arms it was like a dream come true. Everything was great until I ended up getting the baby blues really bad and the eventually ppd and anxiety. I still deal with it and it's hard but I push through it and smile because my baby needs me. People don't tell you how exhausted you will be, how much you will worry about your baby, and how much it actually feels to love a part of you unconditionally.
Hemmoroids will be the death of me. 5 years later and being 21 weeks pregnant again they've flared up with a vengeance. 😖
But everyone is different. But I was never told I wasn't going to be able to get up after I had a csection. After the c section for me it was painful.
And also I didn't have pains or headaches from the epidural.
I had 2 epidurals and really I only felt the needle. I didn't have hemorrhoids I think it was because I had a c section and I didn't have to push. But the reason I had to get another epidural was because I could feel contractions on my left leg lol. Oh and also he had a emergency call while he took the old needle out to put a new one so I had to sit there for an hour with no epidural. I wanted to give up there so badly I cried and contractions are the worse pain ever. But he came back I was extremely happy. I had the one where I pressed the button lol. Everytime the light went on telling me I could press it I'd press it lol.
I had a c section, had an extremely breezy recovery, never got hemorrhoids(even in pregnancy), breastfeeding contractions felt like really mild period cramps, my baby has slept at night ever since she was born i never had to "train" her to sleep right.
EVERYBODY IS DIFFERENT.
for those of you that think soon to be moms should read this you're wronggg. The best thing is to hear the worst stories & best stories, expect the worst but hope for the best!
I didnt have the typical c section where youre awake, aware, able to talk & all that. I had 7 different types of pain killers in me bc my epidural moved out of position so i wasnt getting numb. I TRIPPED BALLS the whole time my daughter was coming into the world. I don't remember hardly anything. But, I wouldn't change it for anything in this world!
No matter what you go through, how hard or easy your pregnancy/delivery the moment you hear that cry or see that little face it all goes away & thats the truth!!!
this probably isn't great material for first time mom's to read..... thanks...
Don't be scared ladies, these things aren't always true for everyone! I didn't think the nursing contractions were all the bad juat a little more intense than period cramp but I hardly paid attention to them be used actually breastfeeding was so painful for me at first lol
Makes me feel so much better about delivering for the first time ever next month. Thanks Preggie app.
its not that things aren't correct. but everyone has different experiences and have different pain tolerances. it also depends on what your labor and birth is like to know what you'll deal with postpartum. either way no one should go into labor feeling scared. have confidence in yourself and your body. woman have been having babies for a very very long time, its nothing anyone CANT handle. plus at the end its the best experience you'll ever have.
I never had hemorrhoids I never got pp after birth!
Some of these things are not correct at all lmao. Ladies every pregnancy is different so don't let this scare you ☺️❤️
This just made things real I have to prepare myself for a whole lot I'm not ready!
Ok well now I'm scared for all the PP issues! And the epidural...
@lovebuggg2016, this is my 3rd pregnancy and will be my 3rd C-section and my 1st one was scary but my 2nd one my recovery was alot faster and easier
My LO is my first kid, but I just remember them telling me that when they were doing the epidural lol @jjjmommie421
@lovebuggg2016, yeah because i didnt get a shock down my legs or have pain either in my back afterwards and alot of thia stuff they put on here would scare the crap out of me if this was my first pregnancy!
If you get a shock down your leg from the epidural they put it in wrong. The guy doing my said if I feel a shock or tingling in my leg it means he need to reposition the catheter. Also, my back didn't hurt after mine so that's not always the case!
get informed on your ideal birth as well as your unideal birth! I was all prepared for a natural birth at its own rate. here's what happened the week I was due my midwife told me they'd induce me the following week b/c I was nowhere near ready to go on my behalf own( my kid was comfy) but that same day during my ultrasound the tech told me she was going to go talk to the doctor because more than likely I was gonna have to be induced now. apparently the week prior when I told my midwife I had a gush of pee but nothing else my water had broke. and the fluids where low and the cord was around his neck. anyway I was induced but with every contraction his heart rate would drop low so c-section it was definitely gonna have to be. y'all I knew nothing!! I felt like a complete idiot...a totally overwhelmed idiot!! I healed super quick though but for like week my lower leg ankle and foot on both sides looked like an overfilled balloon from the epidural.
@mrsgingi I was terrified during my pregnancy just thinking about it lol but honestly it was the BEST experience of my life and I would do it all over again! Especially because the outcome is the biggest reward ever! If was painful yes, but in a completely awesome way! You'll be great! The best thing you can do is mentally prepare but don't over think it. Trust your body it knows what to do I promise! You will be completely amazed at what your body naturally does. You go it momma!! Message me if you need to talk and I can tell you my experience which I think was amazing😊
i was in labor for 7 hours, took 8 pushes. got an epidural at 7cm. never had shock down my legs, never haf back paib after, never felt dizzy after either. i felt nothing during delivery. baby came out at 5p15. 3oz. 21in long. but he got cmv so he was in the nicu for 2 weeks. finally got to bring him home the 12th
Also.. People don't tell you that you CAN have an unmedicated birth. Everyone makes it seem so impossible but in the end, it's not bad at all. I'm not gonna lie and say it didn't hurt, because it hurt like Hell. But to me, it was all so worth it in the end!
@mommy_faith, thanks for saying what you said. Reading most of the other experiences was making me so afraid of my Nov 2016 due date.
Labor and delivery is different for everyone, so don't take what people tell you or things you read online and run with it.
I was in labor for 34 hours 😧😧 and I took the epidural, and yip of advice for anyone who takes it, do not toss and turn too much! I was dumb enough to toss and turn a lot, that the tube that was in my back came off, and I started to feel the worse contractions. I was on pitocin so they were twice as worse. The doctor tried to put it back in but couldnt. All I remember was crying and screaming lol.
@preggie.daily, can you do a pp after c section??
The not being able to bend or move easy. going to the bathroom and getting dressed are extremely difficult tasks. makes it very difficult to care for nb :( the hormones are insane as stated here.
The recovery process and the dehydration ....Also constant back pain from the epidural
No one told me that your tailbone can bruise, pop out of place, or even break! I'm 10 months postpartum tomorrow and I still have pain when I sit or walk to long
I got stitches. And my labor wasn't that bad. It only got bad when the medicine before the epidural wore off. I went from 5 cm to 9.5 cm fast. I was on my hands and knees calling for Jesus before I finally got the epidural. I don't think I will have kids for a long time lol
I didn't poop on myself during labor, I did get stitches after pushing two-three times, never got a headache after getting an epidural, bleeding for 14 days straight (not to heavy)
the only reasin u get a migrane after epidural is if theu let u stand up after so long... some of this doesnt happen to EVRRYONE
The big picture is that everyone is different and everyone's labor/delivery/ recovery will be different. Others stories might be helpful or scary but that was their experience and doesn't mean it'll be relevant for you.
I think a big one is missing.. Like the amount of joy and accomplishment you feel when you see your baby for the first time. All how when you are in labor and feeling all that pain you also feel so powerful and like you are doing something amazing! Some of the crying pp is because your baby is just so perfect and you never thought you could love so much! Those big ones are missing in this list
um thought this was supposed to be helpful thanks for scaring me more
I got stitches, the labor and delivery pain was bad, and I was very emotional after birth, but I had none of the other stuff. Everyone is different.
Oh gosh!!! If I had read all that I would have never had a baby. My labor and recovery were very easy. 5 min of pushing, no stiches, or hemmoriods or pooping on self. Yes swollen for about 2-3 days but only bled for about 2 weeks after and not extremely heavy. The baby blues part was the hardest part for me. 😢 cried everyday for almost 6 months.
lol I never got one hemorrhoid I delivered vaginally at 39+4
Yesterday I went out with my boyfriend went to watch a movie, me and him don't live together yet. but point is yesterday when he was dropping me off his like sleep over at my house witch the mom and dad lives. I said no,
his response was why is everyone deciding or making choices for you and their going to do the same with the baby, when I know that's not true. what he thinks is that my mom tells me not to sleep over. So he left all mad. and I felt in my heart that he went on and cheated on me...

Hi
I am into my 15 week now
But since last two days am not having good feeling....I just feel something is wrong inside wid d kid...all my symptoms r too less
Morning sickness is gone....Metallic taste of my tounge is also less....and I feel pain in my abdoman twice or thrice which is very minor though
What should i do i am very confused
Already have gone through 5 scans because of changing gynec
Just feel that untill i hear the heartbeat or see my kid i wont b ok....got sleepless nights
omg! yes to the nursing contractions!!! my first labor was A BREEZE, my second was a horrid experience (not bc of the staff, they were great), but dear baby Jesus the nursing contractions with my second were TORTURE! Almost three months. It was like the last phase of labor all over again every two hours.... It didn't happen with my first and nobody told me until I had my second and they had the lactation ladies come in for first feeding (the first one in our room I mean not the breast crawl one). I thought something was wrong more than once they got so bad. Tylenol is allowed!!!
