I think one of my biggest mind struggles from my single parent situation is - how old will Lyric be when she starts asking where her father is? and how on earth will I be able to tactfully explain to her about him without talking badly about him? I don't want to completely lie, but I don't want to be brutally honest and hurt her.

Single moms in similar situation - Has anyone thought about this big discussion that will need to happen someday? Or do you have older children with a deadbeat father and how did it go with explaining to your child?

My mom lied to me about my father, she still to this day won't tell me the truth even when I tell her I know. Be completely honest and don't volunteer info, wait until she asks specific questions about him and then try to explain. You don't want to come off as the bad guy who only has bad stuff to say. You might include good times with him but also make it clear that there was more bad than good.

My son is 6 and still hasn't asked who his dad is. He's been an addict in and out of prison so we don't ever talk about him but my boyfriend has been raising him since he was little. He knows my BF isn't his dad and calls him by his first name but he hasn't asked at all

My mom was honest with me. That they had a toxic relationship and that she felt it was best for me to make my own decisions concerning him, when I was old enough. That she had enough love for the both of them and that I was nevet a mistake.

Mines a different type of "single" parent. but my boyfriend/ daughters dad passed away & I think, about this all the time and I honestly have no idea how im going to explain to her that daddy is with her everyday just unseen & unheard. that he is in heaven. so I completely understand where you coming from. Telling our children where daddy is will be one of the hardest things we experience in motherhood.
